How do we use food containers?

What do big families usually do with their food? They store it - I know we do! It is not uncommon for us to make double the food we need, and then store it in containers and put it in the fridge. Now some of it is eaten immediately, some is eaten a few hours after and some are eaten the following day, or the one after that. The point is that the food is there, and it is in the fridge and then portioned to plates, or when it is almost over it is usually heated in the microwave while it is still in the same container. That's most likely what most of us do right?

There's also something else. Sometimes - actually quite often - I wake up an hour before my kids go to school, and make them lunch that I put in a small container while it's still hot. If it is hot enough, it will hold the heat until lunch time and it will still be somewhat warm when they are ready to eat it - only a quick heat in the microwave is enough. So one would say that we often put hot food in the food containers and then we also heat the food int he boxes quite often. That sounds normal right? Is it safe?

Well after I read this post about food storage containers, I started thinking about this issue. If you don't want to red that whole post, I will give you a few key notes on the post.

BPA is used in plastic all around us, especially in many different applications that are used in contact with our food.
BPA has been proven to be unsafe as early as the early 70's
BPA leaks from plastic to our foods and drinks, especially when the temperature is high
BPA is dangerous especially for children

If you read those four key notes, and read the few paragraphs above, you will realize the problem. I did some internet searches on the subject, and I found thousands of scientific studies that showed that even small amounts of BPA will cause severe problems with long term use. I didn't read all of the studies obviously, but enough to catch the drift. Then I found the wikipedia page on Bishphenol A. That was a whole other story. Based on that information, there is no way I am ever using a plastic that contains BPA, ever again in anything.

Avoid Bisphenol A

Here are some potential dangers of BPA.

"A 1997 study in mice has found that neonatal BPA exposure of 2 %u03BCg/kg increased adult prostate weight." - Wikipedia

"In Utero Exposure to Diethylstilbestrol (DES) or Bisphenol-A (BPA) Increases EZH2 Expression in the Mammary Gland: An Epigenetic Mechanism Linking Endocrine Disruptors to Breast Cancer." -Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, Yale University School of Medicine

"Exposure to BPA could increase the risk of developing cancer by direct and/or indirect mechanisms." -Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases, University of Nebraska Medical Cente

Your Turn!

I have presented you my case. It's time for you to take action and tell me what you think about this! All the time we use plastic that can be very dangerous, and we use it in a way that can make it even more harmful. The biggest problem is that you can't avoid BPA by removing it from your use - our foods are often packaged in plastic that contains BPA. There was even an article on USAToday that discussed this matter. They said that the biggest exposure comes from food wrappings.

It's time to take action and change your food storage containers, but also everything else in your home. That way we can cause the plastic industry to stop using it - if no-one is buying it, they won't make it! In time they will stop using BPA in other applications, and we have accomplished our goal.
