BPD-Can it be Cured?

Borderline Personality Disorder
I wanted to do a lens that speaks more about The Cures for BPD. Many say it can never be cured, some say they have healed and in a way that could be considered to be cured. If there was more information about ways to help take the edge off of an attack, and more information about DBT I believe that could be more of the focus of this terrible disorder instead of focusing on all of the signs.
The problem with BPD is; it takes using many different methods to cure some of the emotional effects that caused you to be BPD in the first place. I am hoping this lens will help others to find information that may be able to put them on the road to recovery.

How to create Emotional Freedom
While in the midst of an emotional meltdown or crisis, struggling with a new & troubling issue or the re-ocurrance of a chronic issue - it is common to feel hopeless or helpless. What often helps is talking with someone about what is going on... a trusted friend, family member or professional (therapist, clergy, doctor...) This provides the opportunity to partially "release the grip" the situation & emotions have on you and allow room for you to breath and maybe even begin to have some hope.
What is BPD?
Actually the term refers to sufferers who exist on the borderline between psychosis and neurosis. It is the BPD's tendency to exhibit both neurosis and psychosis which is the chief diagnostic paradigm.
Psychosis: a generic psychiatric term for a mental state often described as involving a loss of contact with reality; the fever of mental illness-a serious but nonspecific indicator. Super-sensitivity
Neurosis: a term that refers to any mental imbalance that causes distress, but does not prevent or affect rational thought.
Within this paradigm a number of clear diagnostic features are evident. The American diagnostic manual, DSM-IV, lists nine discrete features and requires five of these to be present over time before a diagnosis of BPD can be made. The nine features (reproduced in brief) are as follows:
1- frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment.
2- A pattern of unstable and intense personal relationships.
3 -Identity disturbance
4- Impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self damaging
5 -Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, threats or self-mutilating behavior.
6- Affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood.
7- Chronic feelings of emptiness.
8- Inappropriate, intense anger.
9- Transient, stress related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms.
BPD Recovery
If you Believe you can be cured, you will be cured...
I have read this more than one time on web pages while doing my research: When people with BPD were asked if they believed they could be cured, the answer was: "It is not a matter of being cured or not, it is a matter of feeling better and getting better. The objective is being able to heal the inner child, and to let go of the childhood memories that entraps many of us with the patterned behavior of BPD.
When someone is first diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, time is needed to adjust to the news. In the past two decades a number of new treatments have been developed. DBT-Dialectical Behavior Therapy has shown to be the most effective in reducing the symptoms of BPD. Does this mean that DBT is an instant cure? No it does not. What it has proven is by attending DBT classes on a regular schedule, by the end of treatment some could be considered "recovered" or "cured". For those who do not fully recover from BPD, treatment has still proved to be extremely helpful!
So what is Dialectical Behavior Therapy? It was developed by: Marsha Linehan, PhD, at the University of Washington. It is a type of psychotherapy; sometimes referred to "Talk Therapy". DBT is a cognitive behavioral therapy, meaning it is a therapy that focuses on the role of cognition (e.g. thoughts and beliefs) and behaviors (e.g. actions) in the development and the treatment of BPD.
Dr. Linehan's theory is: the core problem in BPD is Emotional dysregulation, resulting from mixing biology (e.g., genetic and other biological risk factors) and an emotionally unstable childhood environment (e.g., where caregivers punish, trivialize or respond erratically to the child's expression of emotion) together. . The focus of DBT is on helping the client learn and apply skills that will decrease emotion dysregulation and unhealthful attempts to cope with strong emotions.
Great Stuff on Amazon
This is a list I found.....
-Sticking to your treatment plan
-Attending all therapy sessions
-Practicing healthy ways to ease painful emotions, rather than inflicting self-injury
-Not blaming yourself for having the disorder but recognizing your responsibility to get it treated
-Learning what things may trigger angry outbursts or impulsive behavior
-Not being embarrassed by the condition
-Getting treatment for related problems, such as substance abuse
-Educating yourself about the disorder so that you understand its causes and treatments
-Reaching out to others with the disorder to share insights and experiences
These may appear to be "Simple" things to do, but TRUST in the fact that everything helps, and empower yourself to look even further for additional cures to help aide you on your path of recovery!

The World is filled with Bright Colors
I believe there is a cure!
Just as I know there are colors between Black and White, I know there are alternative healing methods that are available to help you cope with Borderline Personality Disorder or at least take the edge off when you are having an attack.
I think Cindy said it best when she said: "The hardest and most difficult thing to learn is that the work begins within ourselves and without that dedication we will not get anywhere with this."

The Stop Walking on Eggshells Workbook: Practical Strategies for Living with Someone Who Has Borderline Personality Disorder
Amazon Price: $11.90 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
List Price: $21.95
I know the book "Stop Walking on Eggshells" is a book with a lot of good information. From my understanding of DBT, it is a way to help forumulate skills when certain things trigger certain emotions. I would think that working through a workbook may be able to accomplish being another tool, that may be able to aide with DBT sessions. I know I have read other books and by working through the workbooks, I learned different things.
The Most Important Thing
I know that DBT is a very good source from what I am told. They teach you different techniques how to handle the thought before you react to it.
On the web alone (on Google) when you do a search on BPD there are 5,250,000 links. That tells me that something is available that could help you.

- This is a tough topic for sure because it involves people who feel they might have a problem, but yet may not for real. Maybe there is no cure for it, but it is a concern for many. It's possible that some have a form of obsessive compulsiveness that doesn't necesarily mean they are neurotic.

- The next time someone asks me what BPD is, I'm going to send them here.
Currently I'm trying to deal with the "no sense of self" emptiness inside. It's horrible walking around not knowing who you are.
