Who Invented Candy Corn?
The History of Candy Corn
So who do we have to thank for this wonderful candy? Well, there's some dispute... while HowStuffWorks claims that George Renninger invented candy corn, Wikipedia says it was Rebecca Zolotorofe. In any case, the very first candy corn was produced by the Wunderlee Candy Company in the 1880s.Candy corn wouldn't be mass produces until 1900 by the Goelitz Candy Company, which would later become Jelly Belly.
Candy corn was well received by the masses for both its novel appearance and its honey-sweet taste. That tri-color look that we take for granted was revolutionary at the time.

Is Brach's Candy Corn an Endangered Species?
In my area, Kroger and Target have stopped carrying Brach's candy corn. Thinking to fool us, they sell generic candy corn! It tastes awful compared to the real thing, and gives me a strong incentive to shop their competitors.Sadly, the Brach's company hasn't been doing well. Apparently it was mismanaged and until recently relied on an antiquated plant in Chicago. In 2003, Brach's was bought by a Swiss company for $1. You read that right: ONE DOLLAR. But along with Brach's came a hefty debt of $16 million.
Although Brach's candy corn can still be bought at other retail locations, it's a bad sign that Kroger and Target are giving it the boot in favor of their generic version.

- I love love LOVE candy corn, second only to candy pumpkins in terms of Halloween candy. And it has to be the original Brachs - nothing else is the same! Thank goodness I can still get it at our stores out here!
