Use Brain Teasers to Teach While Kids Have Fun
Brain teasers can be used in classrooms, at home for those "I'm bored" days, or at parties as a competition to see which person or team can solve the puzzle first.
The following types of brain teasers are included in this article:

Riddles
Can you solve these riddles?

- 1In a year there are 12 months. 7 months have 31 days. How many months have 28 days?
- 2You are a cyclist in a cross-country race. Just before the crossing finish line you overtake the person in second place! What place did you finish in?
- 3In baseball, how many outs are there in an inning?
- 4I have two U.S. coins that total 55 cents. One of them is not a nickel. What are the two coins?
- 5Your sock drawer contains 24 white socks and 30 black socks. The lights in your room are off, so you cannot see the color of the socks. How many socks must you grab to ensure to have at least one matching pair?
- 6What words are pronounced differently by merely capitalizing the first letter?
- 7What can run but never walks, has a mouth but never speaks, has a head but never weeps, and has a bed but never sleeps?
- 8Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
Answers to Riddles
- 1They all do.
- 2Second Place. If you pass the person in second, you take second place, and they become third.
- 3Six. Three outs for each team.
- 4A fifty-cent piece, and a nickel. I said 'one is not a nickel', but the other one is!
- 5Three. In the worst case, the first two socks you take out will consist of one black sock and one white sock. The next sock you take out is guaranteed to match one or the other.
- 6There are several, and there could be more: 1. job, Job 2. herb, Herb 3. polish, Polish
- 7A river!
- 8The egg. Dinosaurs laid eggs far before there were chickens!
