Brainetics Math & Memory System - Can It Really Help Improve A Child's Performance In School?
I'm the program coordinator and teacher of two specialized focus classes in our district for elementary grades 4th - 6th. Three days a week I lead an accelerated program in which students testing with high IQ levels congregate from different elementary facilities in our region. We explore advanced problem solving, brain games & exercises, and language art's development.
The remaining two days I work with children that possess challenges with their learning capabilities, via attention deficit disorders, comprehension deficiencies, and other learning & behavior disorders. Most of my time with these children is spent on exercises to help improve comprehension and focus, while maintaining a high level of interest through fun & engaging topics and curriculum.
Once I heard about the program from a colleague, and after thorough research, I decided to introduce the Brainetics System in my classroom beginning the fall quarter of 2010. Having over 10 years experience coordinating specialized learning course of studies, within a wide range of learning & intellect capacities, nothing I've come across has had such an impact on my students' desire to learn and challenge themselves.
What I've discovered over the years is that regardless whether children currently like school or not, they want to be good at it.
The reason some kids dread learning is because they struggle in comparison to their peers, which they're more than aware of and is not a pleasant feeling at any age. Once they begin to excel, the more they enjoy it, the more confidence they have, and the harder they try.
At the end of the day children just want to feel special. They get an absolute kick out of being able to do something their other classmates can't. Who doesn't like being the best at something, right? The Brainetics System has been paramount in improving their overall demeanor, attitude, and self-confidence. Particularly for those of my students who have learning challenges, they are now carrying a sense of pride and worth that had been absent before, and are putting forth much greater effort & attention in their work. Since they now feel they are capable of anything, the usual grumbling and complaining has been replaced with a healthy competitiveness amongst the students. It's simply amazing to watch the transition of these kids almost overnight and has made my job as an educator so much more rewarding.
Having said that, Brainetics does come with a $150 price tag. Trust me, it's worth every penny, and if you have the resources you can save money and get FREE shipping when you order it here on Amazon. When I tell most parents the cost, they give me that look like they just swallowed a huge pill. Knowing money is tight for so many families nowadays, I set out on mission to find comparable replacements to this program that all families could get their hands on with any budget. Do yourself a favor and read the Cheaper Alternatives to Brainetics section below to find out where and how to get the same core principles taught in Brainetics, but at about an 85% reduction in price. A Truthful Look At What To REALLY Expect From The Brainetics System
Let's get right down to it and cut through any media or commercial hype surrounding the product and breakdown the true value of the program. Let me first address expectations of what Brainetics is designed to do.If you're thinking your child will become an overnight genius, graduate high school at 12, and then move on to go work for NASA, you've got the wrong idea. Also, if you plan on dumping it on your kid and sending them to their room to "have at it", don't waste your money or the opportunity for your child to really get something beneficial out of it. The system was developed by Mike Byster to encourage ever-important brain stimulation, make math & learning fun again, and improve comprehension through memory recall techniques. It's a program that allows parents & kids to engage and connect.
Don't expect it to replace traditional practice & repetition of mathematical concepts presented in school. However, it will help eliminate much of the anxiety and intimidation that comes with tackling unfamiliar topics, heighten your child's self-confidence, and progress their overall testing results from studying for any subject.
The reality is the complex computations the children in the commercial work out in their heads, the same problem solving math tricks my students have mastered, most college-level math professors couldn't do on the fly.
The Brainetics System is all about empowering their mind & spirit. Poor self-perception and attitude towards learning can develop at a young age. Fortunately, children's minds are much more pliable than adults, and taking the right steps early to correct negative outlooks can be achieved with substantially greater ease than later on in life.
When the realization sets in that they're accomplishing something of such grandeur, something they thought was never possible, something that 99% of the rest of the population can't do, it unlocks a level of empowerment the likes of which you've probably never seen out of them. Being challenged is no longer something kids withdraw from, it's something they invite.

The "How Does This Stuff Work" Explanation
Brainetics helps your brain learn how to operate like a computer does. It allows the brain the ability to receive and store all the information that's being presented to it, properly memorize the relevant data you need to know, and discard and ignore that of which you don't.There are basically three fundamental and supreme reasons that correlate to why the Brainetics System works as well as it does:
Brainetics will help you get to the point of mastering all the acute information and learning skill sets, (organization, problem solving, outside the box creative thinking, concentration, enhanced memory & mental capabilities, and focus) all of which unfortunately are not frequently taught to students in traditional school settings. "Why not?" I ask. A major flaw in our mainstream education system. The absence of these critically important skills can often contribute to hindered development as people progress in life.
Brainetics will tutor and train your brain to function two different parts at the same time, yet independent from one another. One area focuses on memorization of data while the other is busy processing and sorting out all the new stuff that's coming in. Your brain will start to perform at a much higher level of efficiency, and become more robust. This gives students who use the Brainetics program a significant advantage during their academic years and beyond into adulthood.
Brainetics is JUST PLAIN FUN. You won't ever feel like it's a burdensome chore that you have to force upon your child. They'll love doing all the cool games & tricks without the need of a push from mom or dad. Make it a family thing, which is important. Get everyone involved and see how much fun you'll have together.
What's perfect for parents is they give you the opportunity
to test drive Brainetics risk free for a month to give it a go and see if it will work for you & your family. You can't put a price on your child's education, but to have the opportunity to try the shoe on and wear it around for 30 days for a measly 15 bucks, I'd say that's a bargain.
Which Area Does Your Child Need Help With Most?
What Ages Is Brainetics Appropriate For?
I get this question all the time. I'll give you my objective answer to this and the reasons why I feel the way I do. First off, if you've read through the Brainetics System website, you'll find they claim the program is suitable for ages 9 - 90.I can comfortably agree with this statement. Your child should have a handle on multiplication tables before delving into the math modules. Once you start watching the DVD's, it'll be obvious that the target audience of the videos is catered to children prior to high school. Does this mean it won't appeal to older kids, adults, or even seniors? Absolutely not. I wanted all three of my kids to be exposed to the material, but knew the older two would find the Brainetics DVD material a bit "kiddish" if you will.
So what I did was go through a portion of the program with my 13-yr old first, unbeknownst to my older teens. This way, I could become familiar with the content and concepts ahead of time, and get my youngest ready to stump her older siblings. I knew the best way to get them involved would be to have them out shined & bewildered by their so-called "annoying little sister" who was solving complex math problems in her head. The first thing they asked was, "are you guys messing with us?" I knew I had them hooked once they made us prove it wasn't a sham. A little parental mind control at its finest! As a parent, you gotta do what you gotta do.
The Brainetics developers state that 35% of users are ADULTS.
That's a staggering percentage considering the program is marketed towards children. In my opinion, a pretty powerful testament to how well the system works for any age. Not only have I seen great results from my students and my own kids, I've noticed a healthy & practical improvement in my own memory. As the hectic lives us parents lead can have us scatterbrained throughout the day, keeping a better beat on meetings, schedules, and other work & parenting tasks has helped me stay sane & keep my productivity level high without getting so flustered.
In case you've been hiding under a rock, it's no secret that as we age, our mental aptitude begins to deteriorate. For seniors, keeping your mind sharp and your memory on tap is vital to thinking and feeling young. Brainetics gives you a self-paced, challenging, and fun way to practice important mental exercises & games, interrupting the natural regression of cerebral clarity and focus.
Buy Brainetics for the grandkids, and have them over to make use of it yourself. What a great way to bond and have fun with your grandchildren for a weekend, all while staying mentality fit in the process.
Math Shortcuts vs Longhand Work-Through?
There is a big debate on whether math shortcuts is really beneficial for children, as schools will predominantly require evidence that they came to the correct answer via working out the problem longhand. Here's my take on the matter: Schools are going to require longhand math and don't expect that to change any time soon. So where's the benefit of a program that teaches kids problem solving skills that aren't acceptable to institutional standards? Good question. My kids tell me that the most frustrating part of math is not knowing if they've actually come to the right answer. Did they miss a step somewhere? Did they forget to close out this bracket or that? Without having the answer, they won't know if all their work resulted in success until their test scores come back.
What if your child could generate the answer quickly in their head, and know it was right before ever working out the problem? Having this advantage gives them the flexibility of checking their work as they go through it, and determining if they've made any mistakes beforehand, versus crossing their fingers and taking a blind leap of faith. Trust me, this is how most kids feel.
You may have your own take on the subject or Brainetics review, but I call it having a superior "natural" edge, and I'm not modest about making sure my students and my own kids have one. While so many of our adolescents & college students have begun experimenting with focus enhancing drugs that have many adverse side effects, why not train our youth to achieve higher marks in school the old fashion way, with their brains!

- "What I've discovered over the years is that regardless whether children currently like school or not, they want to be good at it." This view is so essential for educators. Kids want to do well. When they are not performing at their best, we have to ask why and not assume they don't want to succeed. Thank you for the insight!

- They should have a decent grasp of the multiplication tables. Most schools traditionally start introducing multiplication in the 3rd grade, usually around age 9. Some schools may very well begin sooner.

- Have been using this for a month now and the improvement in my son's attitude to school and confidence has been huge. This change in him alone made the product value for money for me. Thanks so much I just wish this programme could be taught in all New Zealand schools as well.

Brainetics Scam - Is There Really Such A Thing?
I've found that sometimes when you search for Brainetics on Google, a related search pops up below for Brainetics Scam. As a result, about 6,000 people per month are reported to have searched for this term. That's a pretty high number, so what's going on here? Is there really a Brainetics scam you need to worry about?
Fortunately, no. It's very common practice for people to put the word "scam" in the title of their web pages, because it draws a high level of instinctual curiosity. This allows them to get a lot of visitors and spammy ad views for garbage unrelated to the information a person is trying to find. Once that search phrase registers into the "related searches" drop down menu, it naturally gets a high amount of clicks & views, and pushes it higher up the list.
Based on a very natural human tendency to avoid wasting money and being duped
(that sounds like most of us out there), people inadvertently cause search engines to deliver information that often won't help them. As a consumer, feel comfort in knowing there's no such thing as a Brainetics scam, just a confusing glitch in search technology that generates a lot of misdirected attention.
