Brainetics Math & Memory System - Can It Really Help Improve A Child's Performance In School?

I'm the program coordinator and teacher of two specialized focus classes in our district for elementary grades 4th - 6th. Let's get right down to it and cut through any media or commercial hype surrounding the product and breakdown the true value of the program. Let me first address expectations of what Brainetics is designed to do.If you're thinking your child will become an overnight genius, graduate high school at 12, and then move on to go work for NASA, you've got the wrong idea. What Ages Is Brainetics Appropriate For?
I get this question all the time. I'll give you my objective answer to this and the reasons why I feel the way I do. First off, if you've read through the Brainetics System website, you'll find they claim the program is suitable for ages 9 - 90.I can comfortably agree with this statement. Your child should have a handle on multiplication tables before delving into the math modules. Once you start watching the DVD's, it'll be obvious that the target audience of the videos is catered to children prior to high school. Does this mean it won't appeal to older kids, adults, or even seniors? Absolutely not. I wanted all three of my kids to be exposed to the material, but knew the older two would find the Brainetics DVD material a bit "kiddish" if you will.
So what I did was go through a portion of the program with my 13-yr old first, unbeknownst to my older teens. This way, I could become familiar with the content and concepts ahead of time, and get my youngest ready to stump her older siblings. I knew the best way to get them involved would be to have them out shined & bewildered by their so-called "annoying little sister" who was solving complex math problems in her head. The first thing they asked was, "are you guys messing with us?" I knew I had them hooked once they made us prove it wasn't a sham. A little parental mind control at its finest! As a parent, you gotta do what you gotta do.

That's a staggering percentage considering the program is marketed towards children. In my opinion, a pretty powerful testament to how well the system works for any age. Math Shortcuts vs Longhand Work-Through?
There is a big debate on whether math shortcuts is really beneficial for children, as schools will predominantly require evidence that they came to the correct answer via working out the problem longhand.Here's my take on the matter: Schools are going to require longhand math and don't expect that to change any time soon. So where's the benefit of a program that teaches kids problem solving skills that aren't acceptable to institutional standards? Good question. My kids tell me that the most frustrating part of math is not knowing if they've actually come to the right answer. Did they miss a step somewhere? Did they forget to close out this bracket or that? Without having the answer, they won't know if all their work resulted in success until their test scores come back.
What if your child could generate the answer quickly in their head, and know it was right before ever working out the problem? Having this advantage gives them the flexibility of checking their work as they go through it, and determining if they've made any mistakes beforehand, versus crossing their fingers and taking a blind leap of faith. Trust me, this is how most kids feel.
You may have your own take on the subject or Brainetics review, but I call it having a superior "natural" edge, and I'm not modest about making sure my students and my own kids have one. While so many of our adolescents & college students have begun experimenting with focus enhancing drugs that have many adverse side effects, why not train our youth to achieve higher marks in school the old fashion way, with their brains!

- They should have a decent grasp of the multiplication tables. Most schools traditionally start introducing multiplication in the 3rd grade, usually around age 9. Some schools may very well begin sooner.

Brainetics Scam - Is There Really Such A Thing?
I've found that sometimes when you search for Brainetics on Google, a related search pops up below for Brainetics Scam. As a result, about 6,000 people per month are reported to have searched for this term.That's a pretty high number, so what's going on here? Is there really a Brainetics scam you need to worry about?
Fortunately, no. It's very common practice for people to put the word "scam" in the title of their web pages, because it draws a high level of instinctual curiosity. This allows them to get a lot of visitors and spammy ad views for garbage unrelated to the information a person is trying to find. Once that search phrase registers into the "related searches" drop down menu, it naturally gets a high amount of clicks & views, and pushes it higher up the list.
Based on a very natural human tendency to avoid wasting money and being duped
(that sounds like most of us out there), people inadvertently cause search engines to deliver information that often won't help them. As a consumer, feel comfort in knowing there's no such thing as a Brainetics scam, just a confusing glitch in search technology that generates a lot of misdirected attention.
