If your dog wolfs down the food, this product may be just the thing!

brake-fast® dog food bowl's design makes it difficult for your dog to inhale their food. The simple obstructions in its design forces them eat more slowly, which may reduce the risk of bloat or Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV). If your dog eats much too fast, this bowl might help.  Also called the Slower Eating Dog Bowl and Healthy Eating Dog Bowl, this innovative bowl has been veternairian tested and recommended. By eating more slowly your dog will feel more full and reduce problems associated with eating to fast (such as vomitting & 're-eating', bloat, gas, etc). See the bottom of this page for more info on GDV. The brake-fast® dog food bowl has a simple design that really works!

Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) or Bloat

This is a term that is synonymous with the more scientific term "Gastric Dilatation/Volvulus." It is often called GDV. That means that a dog's stomach distends with air to the point that it goes into shock and may die. Dilatation means that the stomach is distended with air, but it is located in the abdomen in its correct place. Volvulus means that the distention is associated with a twisting of the stomach on its longitudinal axis. More Info

brake-fast® Bowl Slides Around While Dog Eats

It's supposed to!

The manufacturer has intentionally made the bowl so it will slide around on the floor. They decided the purpose is to make the dog slow down their consumption rate, having the bowl slide adds that much more time when eating.
If you don't like the sliding and want to defeat this feature, Dog Scene suggests you place the bowl on a piece of rubber grip type shelf liner or carpet square. However, keep in mind this may speed up the eating process and defeat the purpose of the bowl.

I love this bowl! My golden retreiver ate so fast she would barf up her food and then eat it again - YUCK! Not only that, she sounded like she was going to choke to death. I was worried she might! With this bowl she takes about 3 times as long to eat and no more barfing!

Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) or Bloat

Bloat is a medical condition in which the stomach becomes overstretched by excessive gas content. It is also commonly referred to as torsion, gastric torsion, and gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) when the stomach is also twisted. The word bloat is often used as a general term to cover gas distension of the stomach with or without twisting. The name comes from the Middle English blout, meaning soft or puffed, which is from the Old Norse blautr, meaning soft or soaked. Meteorism, its name derived from the writings of Hippocrates, is now rarely used in English. The condition occurs most commonly in domesticated animals, especially ruminants and certain dog breeds.

In dogs, gas accumulation in the stomach may cause or be caused by a volvulus, or twisting, of the stomach, which prevents gas from escaping. Deep-chested breeds are especially at risk. Mortality rates in dogs range from 10 to 60 percent, even with treatment. With surgery, the mortality rate is 15 to 33 percent.
