My Truth About Branding

What exactly is branding? Well, a rancher takes a hot iron and sears the hide of every steak on hooves that he owns. Oh. I'm betting you didn't come here to read about that kind of branding did ya? You probably want to read about corporate branding or internet branding. Maybe you'd like to read something on business branding in general.

Sorry to let you down, but I personally think you need to chuck those ideas. To brand yourself means that you're going to have to strip down to your skivvies first. And then go stand in front of a full length mirror. Guess what you're looking at.

You're right! You're looking at yourself almost naked. Put your clothes back on, silly. But as you're getting dressed remember this; you got a glimpse of what I think branding truly is.

Who Are You?

A great band, great time, and the most important question you'll ask yourself.

Enjoy the song as you read through this lens about real branding.

In Front Of The Mirror

Have you ever stood half naked in front of a mirror looking for yourself? Did you find what you were looking for? Did you shirk? If so, did you try to change it, or did you accept it ?

Are you happy with your brand?

Yes, I am comfortable with who I am

cjsysreform says:

Yes, most of the time I'm comfortable with myself. However, there are times when I'm not, and there's nothing wrong with that... it's important to know the difference between honest self-assessment (in which you examine yourself without fear or judgment, just to see what's there) and the kind of fearful self-avoidance Alex is talking about here.

Susan52 says:

Actually, I am happy with who I am, though my brand evolves as I change and continue to narrow myself down. I'm wondering if I'll still be able to say that at the end of this lens, though! (And I surely do like that background music!)

Tipi says:

Yes I am! I would like to gain 5 - 10 lbs. though.

aj2008 says:

I think I am just about comfortable with who I am, but the day I am 100% comfortable may just be the day I stop being who I am!

julcal says:

I am much more comfortable with who i am since i went through my hellish illness - went to hell and back - looked suicide in it's ugly face and lived through it. It was a real "dark night of the soul" and was profoundly transforming. so, yea, i looked at my "shadow's" face straight on in the mirror, lived through it, and came out on the other side. I was having a conversation with a client on the phone yesterday. We were in disagreement. Then he stopped and said "you sure are a happy person!" The argument was forgotten. He said "I can always count on you, can't I?" I said, "for anything." He started telling me stories...

No, I need improvement

Spook says:

I'm inbetween, I can have a good old dekko at myself, say hey you quite a handsome fellow. Then look at my torso which most skeleton's would be ashamed of, flex my non existent muscles and have a jolly good laugh. However in truth when I was younger always wanted to be more muscular but at my age am past caring about it. Ever see the Welsh bloke in Notting Hill when he walked out to face the press, that's what I'm like.

Anton says:

No

sandyspider says:

I cannot strip down. The mirror will break! I am a perfectionist and I have never been comfortable in my skin.
There is plenty of room for improvements. But I will never be happy.

My Breakdown On What The General Definition Of Branding Is

The lowdown is that most definitions of what branding is have boiled the term down to two separate psychological concepts; brand experience and brand image. For purposes of our discussion here, and mostly to put these terms into models I can understand and express, we'll call brand experience the left brain mode and the image is the right brain mode.

Our left brain is our catalog of life. We record all of our experiences on some little tape recorder and tuck them away for reference. In the case of branding, some experts believe that we reference every interaction with the product, logo, and any other points of contact for a vision of the brand. Logic over emotion.

Kellogg's =cereal =quality =breakfast

The right brain however, remembers the emotion that the brand image has burned onto us. It tells how we feel, based on past experiences about a logo, product or brand. In effect, giving life to the sterile left brain images.

Kellogg's =cereal =delicious =breakfast

Laura Lake, Marketing Guide at About.com has this to add about branding:

The objectives that a good brand will achieve include:

* Delivers the message clearly
* Confirms your credibility
* Connects your target prospects emotionally
* Motivates the buyer
* Concretes User Loyalty

To succeed in branding you must understand the needs and wants of your customers and prospects. You do this by integrating your brand strategies through your company at every point of public contact.

What Laura has added is pretty much how the bulk of the business world sees branding. Build trust in your brand, aim your brand, cultivate your brand.

Of course, in my weird way of thinking, I feel that approach is just shy of the bull's eye.

What Branding Means To Me

So, did you click that link above? If you did, I can feel comfortable that my brand is working. If not, I owe myself more time in front of that mirror.

What branding means to me goes beyond logos, products, or target markets. Branding is what you see in that mirror. It is you, who you are and how comfortable you are with yourself. Once others see who you are, you stand a better chance for them to feel comfortable interacting with you, and that is the first step towards trust.

The key ingredient to this wonderful recipe is honesty. Are you honest with yourself? Do you speak honestly to others? Most people can spot a phony. We can tell when someone is trying to blind us from a closer look, and there will always be some amount of reservation towards those who try to blind us. Think about that guy in the cheesy checkered sport jacket down at the corner used car lot. Now, think of Morgan Freeman's voice. I for one would buy just about anything that man would sell. Why? Because I know I can trust him. He is confident and honest. I never hear any bad press and as far as I know, he is genuine, and he wears that cloak comfortably.

Here's where the boat is missed. If we cultivate our persona as our brand, we can pitch any niche we want. If we are sure of who we are, passion comes easy, and if we are filled with passion we can learn anything. No need to target our brand at particular markets. From our personal branding, we can build logos and product. We need to trash all ideas that branding is the logo or product. The problem with that is, you have to stand half naked in front of that mirror for a while first.

There is nothing more relevant than honesty.

If you'd like some really cool biker leathers or have a need to rid your lawn or garden of ground moles, I know this guy......

ChefKeem is more than regular contributor to the SquidLog e-zine; he is also an entrepreneur in his own right. His understanding of branding is dead on as this recent post about branding demonstrates. I think we all should tuck a copy of it inside of our underwear as a cheat sheet for when we stand in front of that mirror.

How Does My Brand Look To You?

Tell me, am I full of horse dung or do I have branding down?

    You have branding down...there is a difference between an individuals persona and the "brand" he or she projects. Michael Jordan "brand" still sales products years after his retirement. However, it took years of consistent winning and partnership with Nike to "burn" his brand into the consumers consiousness. As a result the Michael Jordan brand represents a winner, quality products(clothing and athletic apparel) and Hanes(Boxers or Shorts?).

    I agree - you're full of horse dung! ;) I came here through a link from AJ's who has "come out" so to speak. When I saw the reference to "Drifter" it was your own "branding" which sent me here. That's the point isn't it? Drifter aka ..... - which is the magnet? Which is the brand? An element of mystery must be engendered. To expose is to reveal. Exposing our lives to all and sundry, when we regard that our personality, traits, highs, lows, cares, woes and private lives can be packaged and presented and reduced to a mere brand, diminishes ourselves and leaves us devoid of privacy. The virtual global ethernet encourages this misguided belief that we can comfortably stand naked in front of the mirror. However it is not a mirror- it is a window and everyone is looking through it. The notion that this will give greater credence, more friends, more "saleability", or generate trust and "brand" loyalty, reduces us to mere commercial entities, and when the product loses favour, or the "sell by date" has passed, then there is nothing left - not even our dignity - because we have already been exposed and revealed all.

    So I don't buy the premise of your lens, even though I hold you in high regard. If you were a lesser man I would assume you would not publish this reply. But I know that you are made of sterner stuff, and for that you have my respect.
