Branding

No matter how large or small your company may be branding is something you have to think about. Even a company that is doing poorly can rebrand themselves to become a much better brand.

Here is a great example of branding based upon a true story about a guy named Mr. Harley and his friend Mr. Davidson. In 1903 they sold the first motorcycle which carried their name. Now you may think life was great after that but there is much more to this story. It took five years before they sold the first bike to a police department. In 1917 about one third of their production went to the military so they weren't always seen by the public in the same way they are today. A lot of races were won using their bikes over the years and this helped to build the brand among race enthusiasts.

In 1969 some free branding assistance came from a Jack Nicholson movie called Easy Rider which featured a Harley-Davidson bike and exposed the brand to the general public in a big way.

Today even the sound that a Harley-Davidson motorcycle makes is part of the branding and has been trademarked. The brand has such a loyal following that people will have the corporate logo tatooed on their body; now that is real branding!
