Everthing you need to dominate search engines
Basic SEO starts with your domain name
The name of your business (if available) seems like the obbvious choice right? Wrong.
Yes, your business name should be purchased and used in your promotional materials. Just don't used it as your sites primary residence. Unless your brands name is as well known as Nike or Starbucks the you should set up your company name as a re-direct to the most search fiendly name possible. You might even go as far as to register a few "mis-spelled" versions of your name as long as each of these domains re-direct them to the correct location.
What is the correct location?
That depends on the specific market you want to reach and the search terms they use. One way to generate as strong list of additional keywords is to use the Google keyword sugestion tool. It comes with an adwords account and you don't have to fully sign up for an account to use it. Find out more at http://www.adwords.com
If you haven't tried http://www.wordtracker.com check it out. By signing up for the free 24hr trial, you can find the top search terms, how many people are using them and when. Word Tracker Rocks, but not for $59.00 a month, so use the free trial not the paid version. (If you want to spend $59.00 a month do it with with paid search like AdWords and/or Overature.)
Now that you know the top keywords Combine them in a the way that makes the most sense.
For example:
AA Rent-a-Piano.com performed better in search by using www.aarentapiano.com as a re-direct and use the top search terms such as "piano rentals".
In this case AA Rent-a-Piano only rents pianos in and around San Fransico CA. Since a domain name specific to each suburb and city within that area is not practical, we went back to Google and/or Wordtracker to find other popular search terms for the area AA serves.
The result: www.bay-area-piano-rentals.com
This domain is far more likely to be found by people searching for a rental paino. Anyone using aarentapiano.com is then re-directed to www.bay-area-piano-rentals.com without ever knowing the difference.
One more thing...
Always use en dashes (-) to separate each word in your domain. It makes a big difference when the words in your domain match your prospects search term.
The key is to find and use the search terms that drive the traffic you want. Using those terms in your domain name is a big step toward total search engine optimization.
