Raku: Ancient Art of Firing

Raku is a unique, labor intensive process where pottery is fired in a kiln reaching upwards of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Glazes are applied which are rich in copper, cobalt, manganese, and/or iron oxide.

Upon reaching the desired temperature, the glowing red pottery with molten glazes are removed from the hot kiln with tongs and allowed to briefly cool before being placed into a metal container of newspaper or sawdust.

For a moment the material ignites into flame before being covered with a lid to restrict all oxygen. The lack of oxygen causes the flames to smolder; and the hot piece then cools in a smoky atmosphere creating rare and unique patterns of crackles and flashings.

Every potter has their own unique style and techniques they use to achieve the end results, which makes Raku a great collectible and home decor item. It also well taken as a gift for both corporate and personal occasions.
