Man Shall Not Live By Bread Alone

Ranked #9,736 in Culture & Society, #198,926 overall

"But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

My wife and I was studing the Bible one night. I was listening to it from a Bible on DVD and she was studying from the Bible itself. She told me she like a certain verse in Mathew (more about this later). Then I went back to studing my Bible. In less then 10 minutes I heard almost the same verse in Deuteronomy (more about this later).

So I did a search on Biblegateway for the phrase "Not By Bread Alone" and sure enought the verse also appeared in Luke also. Not very surprising since Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John, the four gospels all share the life of Jesus Christ from four different views. So simular verses and situations will be found in all four books. Not only that the whole Bible the Old Testament along with the New Testament is about Jesus Christ. Jesus is the word (John 1). The same Holy Spirit that inspire the Bible shared the entire Bible. The same impressive wisdom of God is the same throughout the Bible. So ofcourse there will be simular verses.

Coincidence? I don't klnow. But I felt it was a good verse and a good message. Must be important if its found 3 times in the Bible right? I felt like God had spoken this to my heart to share.

"... That Man Shall Not Live By Bread Alone, But By Every Word Of God.

Luke 4:4 (KJV)

The Bible uses bread as a metaphor for the necessity of life. Just as we need bread every day to substain our bodies, we needs Gods word to fill our spirits. This is what Jesus means by "Man Shall Not Live By Bread Alone".
When I started to study the Bible on a daily basis I grew strong in my Christanity. In the begining after I was saved. I had a hard time remembering to read and study the Bible everyday. Then I challenged myself and now I read the Bible as we are suppose to. Now I feel I have really grown spiritually. I really feel like I have filled by soul with the bread of life.

YouTube - In God We Still Trust

This is a video of a song called "In God We Still Trust" by Diamond Rio. Music can help us be strong. I will sometimes go for awhile without listening to music becuase my life gets busy but after awhile sometimes I start to feel empty. When I go back to listening to Christian music, I start to fill whole again. I feel strong again.

I hope you will enjoy this song like I do!

I Don't Feel I Could Be Writing These Devotionals Without Studing Gods Word Everyday.

I don't think I would even be writting this devotional today if I didn't read the Bible as much as I do. I now feel like I know so much more about Gods word that I want to write and share it to everyone. So I hope you will keep your Bible close and read it everyday like I do. It is Gods word and it is the bread of life.
If you feel you don't have time to read the Bible everyday then you need to look at your prioities. Do you want to grow strong in your Christanity? Do you really want to get to know God? Do you want to fellow Gods word? How important is it to watch television or play video games?

YouTube - True Trust

This video is a devotional from Our Daily Bread. I read this everyday. Takes only about 5 minutes a day to read the daily artical. Give it a try. You can find their address below.

Getting Your Fill Of Gods Word Only Takes 15 Minutes A Day.

It only takes about 15 minutes a day. That is how I got strong. I started with only 15 minutes a day. I did that for one week and I really felt strong. I'm not saying that is what will work for you. I don't know you so I don't know how long it will take for you. So just set aside 15 minutes per day to be with the Lord and study his word. Then you will not be living by bread along but by Gods word also.

Even if its only 5 minutes a day. That is about how long it takes for me to read a chapter. You could have your cup of coffee in the morning while reading the Bible. You could get the Bible on tape or CD and listen to it on your car radio or personal radio while you drive to work or while running errands. There is all kinds of ways you can squeeze 5 minutes a day reading the Bible.

In both Mathew and Luke as part of the prayer Jesus uses to teach to pray He says, "give us this day our daily bread" so read your Bible everyday, seven days a week. On Sunday morning I attend my churches Sunday school. Even thoughmost of the hour is devoted to adults but at the begining we sometimes sing children songs since the children in our church start out their class witht he adults. Anyway, one day our assistant Pastor who is our music director and Mastersclubs leader will lead a childrens song.

One morning he lead this song goes something like this:

Read your Bible everyday and you will grow, grow, grow.
Read your Bible everyday and you will grow, grow, grow.

Another part they will sing something like this:
Don't read your Bible everyday and you will shrink, shrink, shrink.
(I am sure you get the idea)

Well I been doing daily Bible ready for over a year now and I really do feel like I have grown alot. QAnd on the otherhand if I miss a day or two I really feel my flesh being weak and not wanting to pick back up. Its been a long time since I have missed a day thank God!

I hope you too are daily in the word, in Gods word, the holy Bible. Don't just read a devotional but get right into the heart of Gods word everyday. Even if you don't understand what you read. Just keep reading and praying about what you read. The more you read, stuidy, pray, and meditate on the word of God, the more you will start to understand the scriptures. I know an Evangelist who when he was saved did not know how to read at all. He wanted to read and study the Bible and decided to teach himself by using the Bible alone. Now he reads his Bible everyday about six hours a day!

I currently read my Bible about an hour a day along with my prayer. Not only that but I attend a Bible institute where I spend three hours in class and about 10-12 hours a week in Bible study for my homework. Then sometimes I do study to write like right here on Squidoo and some other places as well.

Other Places In The Bible You Can Find This Verse

The verse I mentioned above from Luke 4:4 can be found least two more places in the Bible with little different verses. Here they are:

Deuteronomy 8:3 (King James Version)
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

Matthew 4:4 (King James Version)
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Do You Need Prayer?

Maybe you need prayer. Prayer can help you read the Bible everyday. Especially if you feel you don't have the time. Or maybe you feel you just don't want to. You an make a prayer request and I will pray for you. What ever your prayer request is.

You can make your prayer request anonomous. Just enter a nickname. Jesus will know who you are when I pray for you. If your request is too private then either just tell me its unspoken and/or tell me private and I will not approve of the comment and I will delete it but I will still pray for you all the same.

Jesus is the "Bread of Life" so we must be diligent is reading His Word (the Bible), Seek the Father and Live for Him! To Live for Him is to do as He did and that is Help one another and be there for People, just as He Did and is Still Doing! This Life isn't Hard, we make it hard because We just don't want to do what is necessary!

Great lens, thumbs up, faved, liked and dugg. Let the Word go forth.

The Jewish people during the times of Christ linked bread with the law of God; Jesus linked it with every word of God.

He that hath a bountiful (good) eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor. (Pro 22:9)
I believe it is the Mishna where some rabbi made analogy to Moses giving the Law as bread to the poor.

    Eat the Word!

The One And Only Perfectly Inpsired WORD Of God, The King James Study Bible (Amazon Spotlight Review)

Holy Bible King James Version Study Bible (Burgundy)

Amazon Price: $31.73 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $69.99
Used Price: $24.77

The one and only truely inspired, truly preserved throughout four centuries is the King James Bible. Enjoy Gods word as it was originally inspired four hundred years ago this year. Absolutely error free, nothing removed, nothing added to the pure word of God!

Why do I say this? Well there are many many reasons but the biggest one of all God is Omnipontent and is much capable of inspiring and preserving His word. Although most versions if not all say this some take very important words out. I am not talking about the thee, thy, etc. Those sometimes too can be important but when you take a verse like John 3:16 and take out the word begotten it totally changes the meaning of the verse! Now the verse means that only Jesus is the son of God and we are not. Even though in many places we are refered to as this very thing. This basically says God is a liar!

Not only you have Gods perfect word but you have many study tools as well. Maps, concordance, dictionary, topical index and more! A great tool for any Bible student library. Makes an excellent gift!

So What Is Your Daily Bible Study?

When I first started I didn't know what to study.I just randomly opened my Bible where ever and read. Hoever my pastor recommended in a sermon not to do that cause God is not the author of confusion. Which is ture. However, he did not point out any suggestions.

Eventually I did find many many ways you can read and study your Bible. So I thought I would share some of these with you. However, I do not do all of these, some I shared incase you would like to see more.
  • 1Daily Bible Reading Plans.

These are daily Bible reading plans that show you what chapters to read each day to complete the plan. I seen everything from one year to 90 day plans. You can find some reading plans by going to Biblegateway.com where they have several Bible reading plans.

I am currently reading their 365 day cover to cover Bible reading plan. I started 6 months ago and I am in Issiah which I believe is the 25th book. Tipically this is three chapters a day which usually takes about 15 minutes. I am also reading one that is 61 days however it only does the important events in the Bible.

In the past I read the Bible from cover to cover in 40 days. WHEW! That was about three hours a day listening to my Bible on DVD. I was told of someone read the entire Bible from cover to cover in 10 days which I am sure is possible. I know Bible audio is usually 85 hours. So if you did not do much else then sleep and listen and even eat while you listened it is possible. However, I do not recommend either 10 or 40 days. There isn't a lot to gain in doing either one.

I do recommend doing at least one 365 cover to cover plan and one 90 day cover to cover plan. My pastor says everyone should do through the Bible from cover to cover at least once a year. At first I am like WHOA thats not a very easy thing to do. But then I realized the more you read the Bible the more easier and more enjoyable it is to read it. You will learn a lot in the 365 day plan. I have heard in the 90 days or less plans you learn a lot of Bible doctorine. I am planning on this summer starting here couple of weeks doing the Bible in 90 days on top of what I am doing now.

A 90 day plan looks like about 12 chapters a day. I say about an one hour worth of reading. I am looking forward to doing this one. I have been looking forward to it since almost the end of last year but I wanted to wait till Summer when I would be out of school for three months.
  • 2Another Bible study is devotionals. I use to read different ones however they all seem to be going to other versions of the Bible then King James. Here are a list of a few:

    Our Daily Bread (uses NIV)

Baptist Bread (I think this one uses KJV)

Guidelines (this one I don't know what version however does not seem to use KJV maybe the NKJV)

365promises.com has a promise from the word of God for each day of the year. (primarly uses KJV but somtimes refers to other versions within the devotional). I personally use this one on top of my reading plans. Takes about five minutes or less to red.

There are more daily devotionals although I am not familiar with any other daily devotional series. Most of these take less then five minutes to read. I hope and I pray you do not rely on these alone.
  • 3A verse of the day.

I have seen several websites that have this but right now I only use Biblegateway.com. Why? I do not know.

What I like about this the most is since its one to three verses it gives you more of a chance to meditate on this verse. This is more important if you have to rely on listening to the Bible.

Harken Unto My Voice...

... O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Be dilgent in seeking him daily. Be blessed and findeth him who seeth him. Keep his ways and his commandments. Daily seek him and find him abd be blessed. Be blessed with love, mercy, grace, peace, strength, joy, the Kingdom of Heaven and much much more.
