Breakfast in Dallas

Ranked #2,501 in Food & Cooking, #49,528 overall

It's the Best Meal of the Day!

Dallas has quite the wide variety of restaurant options and I love going out to try new places. Figuring out a good place for breakfast to meet friends or colleagues or clients has always been a bit of a challenge, however, if you want to step out of the Cracker Barrell/IHOP/Waffle House box. So here's what I've found or sampled in the Dallas area divided by type of restaurant. I've tried to stay away from anything that's a chain, unless it's a local chain. Enjoy and save me a cup of coffee!!

My Perfect Breakfast

I love breakfast - I just wish it came a little later in the day! I'm rarely hungry when I first get up, so for me, the perfect time for breakfast is around 9:30 or 10. But life rarely works to have breakfast that late, so I often end up with nothing more than coffee.

I've been on a low-carb way of eating for several years now (maintaining a 30-pound loss for several years now, thank you very much!) so I rarely sample the typical bread and sugar breakfast options at restaurants. But I love pancakes! With tons of syrup so I can get my sausage (patties, not links) doused as well. Yum! Breakfast is probably the meal that had to change the most for me with my way of eating - no more toast, grits, potatoes, cereal, milk. Sigh. But there are still so many wonderful options that I really have no room to complain.

My typical order at a restaurant will be some version of an omelet, however. My favorites always involve mushrooms and spinach with some type of weird cheese. I definitely prefer sausage patties to links and bacon above all on the meat side. And plenty of hot coffee, of course!

So pull up a chair and let's head out on a breakfast adventure in Dallas. If I've been to a place, there will be note of that. Otherwise, we'll just discover them together!

Coffee Houses in Dallas

You can find Starbucks by yourself. Here are other options to consider, some of which offer no more than a limited pastry menu, some of which give you some hot options as well. But all serve the most important part of breakfast - coffee!!
  • Cafe Brazil
Multiple locations throughout the Dallas area, all open 24-hours a day and serving breakfast anytime. They offer specialty coffees as well. I love the spinach omelet - it's a little different, though as they pile everything on top of the eggs rather than stuffing them inside.

Best damned biscuits in the city. Well worth breaking any diet for, at least half a biscuit. And an omelet that was more stuffing than egg and just plain old yummy.
  • Bubba's Cooks Country
    6617 Hillcrest Ave
    HOURS: Daily 6:30am-10:00pm
Almost as diner as you can get and a great value, a given considering its location just north of SMU and right on Snyder Plaza. Order at the counter, fix your coffee then head for one of the red vinyl booths. Breakfast menu includes basic eggs, sausage or bacon, pancakes, gravy and huge biscuits. Mix and match. Not a fave for me.

Classy Joints in Dallas

Breakfast is my favorite meal for a business meeting. I'm fresh and ready to go, food options tend to be limited so ordering is easier. Here are the kinds of places you could take a client to without shame.
  • Craft Dallas
2440 Victory Park Lane, in the W Hotel
    HOURS: Breakfast served 6:30 am-11 a.m
I've been here for dinner and it was quite good. The menus are a little strange, however, mix-and-match style and they appear to be the same for breakfast.
  • The Bistro at the Adolphus
    1321 Commerce St.
    HOURS: Daily 6:30 am-10 pm
  • Landmark Restaurant
3015 Oak Lawn Ave., in the Melrose Hotel
    HOURS: Mon-Fri 6:30 am-2 pm, Sat-Sun 7-11 am, Sun brunch 11 am-2 pm
Just a lovely place with great food. Plenty quiet for conversation. Valet parking on the back side of the hotel is your best bet, but you can try to snag a spot on the street where the taxis line up.
  • Dragonfly
2332 Leonard St., in Hotel ZaZa
    HOURS: Daily 7 am-2:30 pm
  • Pyramid Grill
1717 N. Akard St., in the Fairmont
    HOURS: Daily 6:30-11 am

Casual Cafes in Dallas

More casual than Classy Joints list and less predictable than a diner, but still a good set of places for business meetings or catching up with friends.
  • Kathleen's Sky Diner
    4424 Lovers Ln
    HOURS: Mon-Fri 7 am-11 pm, Sat 8 am-11 pm, Sun 8 am-10 pm
Truly eclectic type place - my omelet of choice includes chicken! (Formerly Kathleen's Art Cafe.)
  • Tin Star
    2626 Howell St.
HOURS: Open at 7 am during the week, 8 am on weekends
    Breakfast tacos and the like
  • Dream Café
    2800 Routh St.
    HOURS: Mon-Thu 7 am-9 pm, Fri-Sat 7 am-10 pm, Sun 7 am-8 pm
I've been working my way through the omelet menu here, while my friend always gets the famous Cloud Cakes - huge pancakes with crème fraiche and strawberries. We tend to visit the one in Addison rather than the Routh Street location. Hardly anyone there for breakfast during the week, which makes it a great place for conversation.
  • Garden Cafe
    5310 Junius
    HOURS: Tue-Sun 8 am-2 pm
  • Benedict's
    4800 Belt Line Road
    HOURS: Mon-Fri 6 am-2 pm, Sat-Sun 6:30 am-3 pm
They recently were picked as one of the best breakfast places in Dallas, but you could have fooled me. Just not anything worth calling best.
  • Neuhaus Cafe
    626 Preston Royal Shopping Center
HOURS: Open at 7:30 am during the week, 8 am on weekends
  • Opa! Grill
    12829 Preston Road
    HOURS: Mon-Sat 6:30 am-2:30 pm, Sun 8 am-2:30 pm
Greek restaurant, so expect lots of spinach choices!
  • Bread Winners Bakery and Cafe
    3301 McKinney Ave
    HOURS: Mon-Sat 7 am- 4 pm, Sun 9 am- 3 pm
    All Major Credit Cards
I love sitting out in the interior courtyard, although I always seem to end up in a place where the bricks are uneven and my chair rocks. A little noisy for a business meeting, but great place to meet friends, although way too many bread temptations.
  • La Duni Latin Kitchen and Baking Studio
    4664 Oak Lawn Ave.
    HOURS: Breakfast: Mon-Fri 7-11 am, Brunch: Sat-Sun 9 am-3 pm
  • Henk's European Deli and Black Forest Bakery
    5811 Blackwell St.
HOURS: Open at 7 am Mon-Sat, Sun 11 am-3 pm

Sunday Brunch in Dallas

The Sunday brunch is almost a religion in Dallas. Restaurants that don't normally serve breakfast of any type will pony up to offer a brunch menu. What you get in terms of "breakfast" food varies widely.
  • Monica's Aca y Alla
    2914 Main St.
    HOURS: Sun 9 am-3 pm
  • Antares
    300 Reunion Blvd
    HOURS: Sun 10:30 am-2:30 pm
This is the restaurant up in the top of Reunion Tower, which rotates around so you can see the entire view.
  • Blue Goose Cantina
    2905 Greenville Ave
Several locations around the Dallas area, brunch with a definite Tex-Mex influence
  • Blue Mesa Grill
    7700 W Northwest Hwy Ste 740
HOURS: Sunday starting at 10 am
Slim strip of a door in the strip mall, so make sure you don't walk past! Buffet brunch with several different stations and a definite Tex-Mex flavor. I suggest going earlier rather than later. If you get there around noon, plan for a long wait. The buffet line can get quite crowded, make sure you check out all the offerings before you commit to what's at the beginning. I love the blue-corn enchiladas and the bean soup. Omelets made to order. In shopping strip on southside of Northwest Highway, across from NorthPark Mall.
  • Brooklyn Jazz Cafe
    1701 S Lamar St
    HOURS: Sat-Sun 11:30 am-4 pm
With live jazz and lots of seafood options
  • City Café
    5757 W. Lovers Lane
    HOURS: Sun 11 am-3 pm
Reservations are recommended for one of the most popular brunches in the area.
  • Dovie's

    HOURS: Sun 10:30 am-2:30 pm
  • Lawry's the Prime Rib

  • Parigi
    3311 Oak Lawn Ave.

Live piano music, charming little place. Brunch is a fixed-price menu or you can order off the regular menu.
  • Renaissance Garden Café
    5201 W Lovers Ln
HOURS: Daily 10 am- 5:30 pm
  • Saffron House
    5100 Belt Line Road
    HOURS: Sat-Sun 11:30 am-3 pm
Another new brunch option and definitely the place for something different as this is an Indian restaurant.
  • Terilli's Dallas
    2815 Greenville Ave
Closed for a while now due a fire that destroyed it. Planning to reopen early 2011.
  • The Bronx
    3835 Cedar Springs Road
    HOURS: Sat-Sun 10 am-3 pm
  • Truluck's
    2401 McKinney Ave.

Sources of Online Restaurant Reviews of Dallas Restaurants

Excellent sources for complete reviews

I'm working on going to all the restaurants I mention above so I can give you my own opinions. But just for a more complete (and immediate) view, check out the below links
Guidelive
Restaurant reviews from the Dallas Morning News. Warning: this site isn't always the most helpful and is often quite slow. But it has almost every restaurant in the Dallas with links to websites and more.
Dallas Dines Out
Rather limited list of restaurants, but some good info here. Search by name, price, location or cuisine.
DFW Menu
Search by cuisine, neighborhood and/or zip. Don't bother with the "breakfast" link, though. It only listed Denny's and IHOP.
Mr Breakfast.Com
Mr. Breakfast ranks area restaurants on a 1-5 egg scale. He includes pedestrian fare such as Burger King and Whataburger, but also some of the better places in the area. Restaurants get a rating based on coffee refills and expense as well. Reviews are from registered users
Chowhound
Chowhound never disappoints! This post delivers lots of suggestions from users to a poster's question regarding where to have breakfast in Dallas. Do a search for "Dallas" if you're looking for something other than breakfast.
