"Breaking the Distance Barrier"

This lense is all about the physics of the golf Swing and how a little science can help you develop a "natural" swing that will optimize your distance potential.

The content is of particular use for women golfers and senior golfers who may feel their distance ability is limited...

Every golfer has a "natural" swing.

What is your "natural" swing you might ask?

That's simple. It is the swing that produces those amazing shots that often come out of nowhere on the course or on the range where the ball flies 20-30 yards further than your normal distance...

That is no accident. You have the ability to produce those shots every time. The question though, is how do you pull off that performance when you need it?

The answer lies in knowing the science behind the golf swing...

Golf Mechanics and Physics.

I have written a golf book called Breaking the Distance Barrier that explains the "physics and mechanics" of the golf swing to you as never before to help you uncover your "natural" swing that is capable of repeating those great shots with absolute control...

The content of the book is based on using a "Laws of Motion" approach to swing development.

In the book I explain why it is so critical to "match" your swing to your "body shape, size and flexibility" for optimum swing speed, swing balance, swing torque generation and swing consistency...

The approach I describe is not based on some "secrets of the golf swing" theory that you see posted all over the internet these days.

It is based on "undisputable scientific principles" described in "simple and clear" detail that will show you how to achieve smooth golf swing tempo, improved distance and improved swing repeatability.

Achieving your natural swing requires you to remove both "mental and physical barriers" that are preventing you from achieving your lowering your scores by as much as 5-10 strokes a round.

Breaking the Distance Barrier is a practical program, helping everyday golfers around the world of all levels, of all ages, shapes and sizes develop a repeatable golf swing that is raising their game to new performance levels.

I am eager to share this information because I guarantee that any golfer with knowledge of golf physics will improve their game.

Match your swing to your physique to achieve optimum distance performance...

Dear Fellow Golfer,
I am a golf and physical fitness instructor who also happens to be a mechanical engineer. A pretty unusual combination I would say that gives me a broad perspective on this game...

Over the years I have studied the reliability and function of the golf swing using a combination of my engineering back ground, practical knowledge of teaching golf and experience of physical fitness education to produce a swing development program that is simple, yet very effective.

The golf swing is an organic system of joints, levers and motors that is governed by the same principles of motion and complexity of control as any mechanical system.

I am sure you have heard mechanics or engineers use the term "the more moving parts, the less reliable the system". The same can be said of the golf swing. The more moving parts you have in your swing, the harder it is to control and the less consistent your swing will be from shot to shot.

The number of "moving parts" you have in your golf swing is governed largely by the "flexibility" range of your swing and how far you push your swing beyond this range.

The further you push your swing beyond your natural flexibility, the more physical breakdowns occur creating "unwanted motion" that increases the complexity and inconsistency of your swing.

In many cases these break downs take place without you knowing because they are so difficult to "feel" or detect in real time, even with a trained eye watching you.

Trying to copy the swings of the pros can hurt your game...

All too often the techniques of many instruction courses and golf articles you read are based on the observation of the swings of top class golfers who have spent years developing their golf physiques.

As technically sound as these courses are, many encourage you to swing well beyond your "physical capabilities" causing "mechanical break downs" in your swing simply because they ignore your shape, size and flexibility.

Remember this. If you are unable to match the flexibility range of the top players and you try to copy their swings, you will make your swing worse.

You only have to watch the swings of Sergio Garcia and Bubba Watson below to appreciate their incredible swing flexibility and how difficult it is for the average golfer to copy their technique.

Before I became a full time instructor and golf author, I studied the motions of the swing just as I would any mechanical system. Since the golf swing is a moving entity, the "Laws of Motion" equally apply as they would to any mechanical system.

I completed this analysis five years ago and it completly changed the way I teach and think about the golf swing and I am kicking myself for not doing this years earlier.

The big realization that came out of this study was how critical it is to avoid mechanical breakdown during the swing and how seriously that impacts the power of the swing.

Many golfers are aware that they are causing breakdowns during their swing, but simply ignore them as being important to their swing performance.

If you understand the simple physics and mechanics behind the golf swing, you will relaize the impact to your accuracy and distance performance of even the slightest of swing break down.

Every golfer has a swing range within which they can eliminate most "unnecessary motion" in their swing thereby improving their swing balance and optimizing the swing torque and distance they can generate during the swing.

This is what I refer to as your "natural" swing range where you will experience the highest level of swing control.

What many golfers do not know, especially us senior golfers who are not quite as mobile as we used to be, is just where the limit of their swing flexibility ends.

Believe me, once you understand the mechanics of the swing, many of you will be pleasantly surprised where the limits of your flexibility end!

Once you uncover your "natural" swing which "matches your physique" your distance and consistency performance will soar...

It does not matter if you are physically restricted by your body shape, by injury, stiffness due to maturing years or by your perceived lack of physical strength, you have a "natural" swing that is capable of producing solid golf shots.

Breaking the Distance Barrier will give you the knowledge you need to extract and develop your "natural" swing...

Understanding Golf Physics to Improve Swing Performance

"Newton would have been a great golf instructor!"

There are mountains of material available that will tell you "how" to swing a golf club.

Having a working knowledge of the physics of the golf swing helps you also understand "why" these techniques are so critical for optimizing swing performance.

This is now becoming an important topic in golf instruction and changing the way instructors teach golf...
Delayed Hand Release and Swing Speed
This article will show you how simple high school physics can explain why the "delayed hand release" on the downswing can increase club head swing speed.

This technique is one of the least understood techniques by most golfers. Yet, it is the most effective for increasing distance with less effort.
Left Arm Stablitiy for Greater Torque Transfer
This article describes how important it is to maintain a firm left side during the swing to maximize torque transfer and improve swing consistency.
Golf Swing Physics
Every amateur golfer needs to understand a little about the physics of the golf swing to fully appreciate where torque and swing power is generated in the body.
Physics of Lower Body Golf Swing Power
Many of the longest hitters in the history of the game will admit that they achieve most of their swing power from their lower body.

This article helps you understand the physics behind that power.

I release a frequent newletter from my main online teaching wesbite at Highlander School of Golf.

This newsletter is full of articles and golf instructional tips that tend to be a little more technical in nature about swing technique, strategy and golf fitness.

Sergio Garcia

- Power of the delayed hand release

I have always admired the power of Sergio Garcia's Swing.

He is one of the smaller players on tour, yet he is also one of the longest hitters.

His distance power comes from a rock solid left side that develops maximum torque on the backswing and an unbelieveable delayed hand release technique that lowers his swing MOI to deliver incredible acceleration on the downswing.

Observe how there are no breakdowns in his swing...

Bubba Watson

- Incredible swing power

Bubba Watson is probably the longest hitter on tour. During this video watch how he generates unbelievable backswing torque in his lower body - his left leg is stable as a rock.

Also - check out his delayed hand release technique...

Again observe how there are no breakdowns in his swing...

Everything in these articles are about holding the release of the golf club for as long as you can. Try the SwingRite training aid and learn how to hold that release.

Great Lens Les! I can relate to your golf swing analysis. I agree that you can't try and copy the PGA pros. I was looking at a video of Sergio's swing - a 2 plane swing - that looks unbelievably complex. I have it on the homepage of my site http://www.golf-online-tips.com/ as it impressed me how he gets back on plane just before impact.
