From Publishers Weekly
Breast cancer surgeon and force behind the Breast Cancer Research stamp (which raised some $30 million for the cause), Bodai teams up with freelance writer Panneton to offer uplifting tales of women who faced mastectomies, radiation and chemotherapy with courage, humor and grace. Personal essays and reminiscences run the gamut from funny to wise to heart-breaking: Leslie Mouton broadcasts the news sans wig to show there's nothing shameful in hair loss; Laura Jensen Walker laughs about the "original slim-fast chemo diet"; Justine McCollum muses about how breast cancer can be looked at as a gift of higher understanding. All the testimonials within urge a profound love for life and family, and seek to reach out to other women facing their own battles with cancer: these stories, Bodai writes, should function as "valued friends who have been there before you and are now extending a hand to help you through your own experience."

Book Description
From The Breast Cancer Book of Strength & Courage:
This was a special night, a night when I would share with the public one of the most private parts of my battle against breast cancer. This was the night I would share my story of hair loss. . . . Steve turned to me, the camera took a two shot, and there I was, for the first time in my life, anchoring a newscast without a strand of hair on my head.
It was quite a moment, for many reasons. Mainly, for me, it represented how far I'd come, and how much I'd grown! Cancer has become a journey of self-discovery that has helped me develop self-confidence and learn to love myself for myself.
- Anchorwoman Leslie Mouton, who reported the news in Texas one night while bald due to chemotherapy treatments
Perhaps you or a loved one has recently heard the words, "You have breast cancer." Now what? How can you turn these fearful words into the first step on a journey of strength and healing? You'll discover that these words are more powerful than you think. So powerful that they can help you uncover a level of bravery and fortitude you might not feel is possible right now-one that lies deep within you, ready to emerge, ready to fight. You can transform your feelings of dread and despair into triumph.
Inside, you'll discover intimate first-person accounts of breast cancer survivors, women who confronted their diagnosis, clutched the thoughts, hopes, and encouragement already present in their daily lives, and embraced new ideas and old passions that helped sustain them during their struggle to restore their health.
These touching personal stories are told by special women who dug a little deeper to climb the biggest mountain of all. Their reassuring words are like having a welcome friend come to you in a moment of need-an invaluable source of strength, wisdom, love, and laughter. Page after page, you'll learn not only how to survive, but also how to forge a powerful and positive mental attitude.
An official book tie-in with Cure Breast Cancer, Inc. A portion of the royalties from this book will benefit breast cancer research, education, and outreach.

From Publishers Weekly
It's hard to believe that a breast cancer guide can be fun, but breast cancer survivor Cohen and oncologist Gelfand have produced a book that combines medical information with the kind of warm, funny, rueful sharing a woman gets from a good talk with her girlfriends. The authors understand that surviving an illness as emotionally and physically traumatic as breast cancer requires help not only with big issues but also with apparently trivial ones. In between solid and well-summarized discussions on diagnostic, treatment and reconstruction options, they share a plethora of tips on the smaller but still difficult problems faced by disease victims, such as finding the right post-chemo headgear (silk slides off a bald skull, so cotton is better). They prepare readers for everything from insensitive remarks (when Cohen told one acquaintance she was starting chemotherapy that day, he replied, "So I guess you're not available for lunch") and hormonal swings to insurance problems. The tone is upbeat but realistic, sympathetic but never patronizing; "Rules of the Road" sections directed to friends and family give them advice on how to offer useful support. This wise, balanced book is a welcome addition to a woman's medical care library, offering not just warm, intelligent hand-holding for breast cancer victims but also useful insights for anyone with a friend or family member suffering from this frightening disease. From Library Journal
Having someone to talk with who has been there can make that mind-numbing diagnosis of breast cancer somewhat bearable. Even a stranger from a support group or the friend of a friend can reassure you just because she knows what you're going through. Cohen, a breast cancer survivor, has chosen to be that confidante and information source. She outlines every step of the process from diagnosis to posttreatment in a way that is congenial, honest, wry, and straight-from-the-hip. Books by physicians (e.g., John Link's The Breast Cancer Survival Manual, LJ 3/1/98, which is frequently referenced here) have excellent information, but Cohen's friend-in-need approach offers a unique and welcome perspective. In addition, oncologist Gelfand steps in where more technical discussions and definitions are required. As Cohen gives the real skinny on options, chemotherapy (eat Fudgsicals to minimize or eliminate mouth sores), radiation (grow your own aloe plant for relief of skin irritation), relationships, workplace issues, and aftercare, she considers "Rules of the Road" for family and friends to help them know what to do and say during a loved one's ordeal. This is a wonderful book; all patient health collections should have several copies.

Book Description
The wife of Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre, Deanna was inadvertently thrust into the spotlight when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. Now cancer-free, Deanna is one of breast cancers leading activists, speaking and raising financial support for women who are "medically underserved" (uninsured or under-insured).) Deannas story shares the role her faith has played in her life--from her years as a single mom and her high profile marriage to Brett, to her battle with breast cancer and the work she is currently doing through the HOPE Foundation. Includes 24 pages of color photos, a foreword by Brett Favre, and an afterword by Brittany & Breleigh Favre.

From the Back Cover

At age thirty-five, Deanna Favre had it all
A loving husband at the peak of his NFL career
Two beautiful daughters
A wonderful life . . .

And breast cancer.

No one is immune to tragedy. Deanna Favre is living proof.

A shy, small-town girl from Kiln, Mississippi, Deanna had always been perfectly content to let her famous husband steal the spotlight. Though married to the NFLs only three-time MVP, she preferred to live a life of quiet anonymity.

But on December 22, 2003, when television cameras zeroed in on a somber Deanna watching her grief-stricken husband lead the Green Bay Packers to a victory over the Oakland Raiders immediately following the death of his father, the spotlight shifted. Deannas life was about to change forever.

Tragedy struck again the following October, when Deannas younger brother, Casey, was killed in an ATV accident. Four days laterstill reeling from the loss of her brotherDeanna was diagnosed with breast cancer.

* * * * * *

Through it all, however, Deanna has emerged a survivor. In this candid and inspirational memoir, she shares the triumphs and the tragedies of a life lived both behind the scenes and on center stage. From her years as a single mom and her high-profile marriage to Brett, to her highly publicized battle with breast cancer, and the work she is currently doing through the Deanna Favre HOPE Foundation, Deannas story is living testament that with faith, hope, and love, ordinary people can overcome even the most extraordinary circumstances.

Amazon.com
An informative and absorbing read for both medical practitioners and their patients, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer takes aim at "the breast cancer industry" with a barrage of thought-provoking ammunition.
The book is equal parts criticism and suggestion. Current health treatments, including HRT, receive serious condemnation, and authors John Lee and David Zava carefully provide plenty of medical research to back up claims that excessive estrogen is a main source of cancer-causing irregularities. While the names of all the different natural and synthetic hormones can get overwhelming for the lay reader, with perseverance your new vocabulary of terms like androstenedione, estradiol, and cortisol will enable you to communicate more effectively with your doctors. The authors credit these hormones not just with a role in cancer, but with culpability for everything from insomnia and acne to fatigue and migraines. A full chapter extols the virtues of natural progesterone cream, and urges women to order their own saliva tests for proper evaluation of their hormone levels.

Diet and exercise recommendations are simple, outlining reasons to limit fats, sugars, and meats while increasing vegetables and adding a multivitamin. These recommendations extend to adolescents and urge getting off the couch and beginning a gentle exercise program to women of all ages and in each stage of life. --Jill Lightner --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description
"I am not my breast, and I am not cancer; they are only pieces of who I am. What is my heart like, am I kind, strong, loving, compassionate. . . . Those are the things that count."

I Am Not My Breast Cancer gathers the warm, loving, frank, and informed voices of more than 800 women-from every state in the nation and from continents as far away as Australia and Africa-who reveal their fears, trade advice, share experiences, and express their deepest, most intimate concerns. Nothing before this groundbreaking book has captured the real experience of breast cancer. It is essential reading for any woman with this diagnosis.

I Am Not My Breast Cancer offers women the companionship of other women dealing with this disease. Ruth Peltason, who has twice undergone treatment for breast cancer, has woven their stories together while maintaining the authenticity of their voices. These are ordinary women dealing with this cancer and its many ramifications. They range in age from their early twenties to their late seventies. They are the collective face of breast cancer today. Their comments are moving, sometimes funny, always honest. They speak out on every topic, from lovemaking and intimacy to losing their hair, from juggling the day-to-day realities of being a patient, mother, wife, and coworker to the overwhelming worries about their own mortality. Remarkably, they emerge with grace and optimism and a determination not to be defined by disease.

Taking the reader chronologically through the stages of diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and self-discovery, I Am Not My Breast Cancer offers women a deeper understanding of themselves and living with cancer. As Peltason writes in her introduction, "My greatest wish for this book is that it offer comfort to any woman living with breast cancer and to those who care about her. If this book is kept on the bedside table, then I hope its need is brief and its impact lasting. I Am Not My Breast Cancer speaks of courage, heroism in deeds small and large, and incredible faith and fortitude."

"You can live without a breast. You cannot say the same for the human heart."

From Publishers Weekly
Peltason, an editor and breast cancer survivor, founded and hosted the First Person Plural Web site project, an online forum for women facing the disease. Their dialogue provides the content for this book, culled from the entries of 800 women across the U.S. and around the world. Peltason organizes the material into three general parts: Diagnosis, Living with Breast Cancer and The Big Picture, with such subtopics as Sharing the News, Being Womanly and Anniversaries and Milestones. Participants use screen names for privacy, approaching their disease with candor and freely discussing their feelings about their bodies and their relationships. At times, those overcome by anger and fear far outweigh those with a bright outlook, but when these survivors look in the mirror at the conclusion of the text, many envision a hopeful future. Perhaps the most poignant entries are from younger women, some of whom have been driven into early menopause and infertility by chemotherapy. Although this is an informative book, some survivors may discover that these raw entries churn up disturbing emotions; others will find comfort in these voices, and in the knowledge that they aren't alone-either in their sorrow or in their strength and courage. From Library Journal
Lymphedema is a swelling caused by an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in tissues and is common among women who have undergone breast cancer surgery with axillary node dissection and/or radiation. Yet prior to surgery, most women are unaware of this condition and the heartache it can bring. Burt, a human resources consultant and breast cancer patient who has been affected by lymphedema, and White, a physical therapist, have put together an informative little book that should help all women suffering from the condition, at least to some degree. In the past, many women were told they would have to live with the swollen arm and lack of mobility that appeared after their surgery. Burt and White present treatment plans, massage therapies (professional and self-administered), and exercise regimens to alleviate or diminish this surgical aftermath. Though the authors advise vigilance to keep the skin and affected arm as healthy as possible, unfortunately, lymphedema can strike many years after surgery. Their useful guide will help women remain active and, one hopes, less obsessed with the "other" results of breast cancer. Recommended for patient health collections.

From Publishers Weekly
Although countless books and pamphlets have been written for women recently diagnosed with breast cancer, little exists for women who have finished their treatment. While many outsiders assume that the end of treatment brings only relief, women who have had breast cancer know that the post-treatment chapter in the breast cancer experience is one of the most difficult. Schnipper, a breast cancer survivor and an oncology social worker, helps prepare women for life after breast cancer by imparting information and advice in an intimate and direct manner. She covers all aspects of the experience, including physical recovery, coping with family members who expect everything to go back to normal immediately, fertility and fear of recurrence. The idea of transformation underlies the book, and she devotes a moving chapter to the different ways some women have gained or regained a sense of spirituality. As Schnipper writes, "Our lives have been changed in many ways and we have tried to be understanding and flexible about our possibilities.... Our hearts and souls, however, need time to catch up." In this volume, readers will find a guide that might help them better understand their infinitely complex circumstances and find hope.

"Breast cancer is never completely over," says author Marisa C. Weiss, M.D., a radiation oncologist. Even when x-rays are negative and doctors proclaim remission, breast-cancer survivors often suffer from continued health problems along with elevated levels of anxiety, and the specter of recurrence is just a small part of the picture.
Living Beyond Breast Cancer: A Survivor's Guide for When Treatment Ends and the Rest of Your Life Begins has won endorsements from both Bernie Siegel and former surgeon general C. Everett Koop. It deftly and with compassion maps out a guide for going back to a "normal" life: for handling fears of recurrence and worries that family members will develop breast cancer and for managing physical posttreatment problems, including the lingering side effects of radiation, fertility difficulties, changes in sex drive, and feelings of unattractiveness.

Living Beyond Breast Cancer is comprehensive--at more than 500 pages, it has the room to thoroughly cover pain control and medication, genetic testing, weight management, hormone and tamoxifen therapy, alternative treatments such as traditional Chinese medicine, breast reconstruction, and the various tests for recurrence, from PET and CAT scans to MRIs and blood testing for cancer markers. It's also a superb reference for emotional issues, from depression and generalized anxiety to insecurities about reentering the job market and revealing the cancer experience to coworkers. Weiss includes many quotes from breast-cancer survivors, so readers know they're not alone. The extensive resources and excellent index add to this book's immense helpfulness. --Erica Jorgensen --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Foods, exercises, and attitudes to keep your breasts healthy. Supportive complimentary medicines to ease side-effects of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or tamoxifen. Foreword by Christiane Northrup, M.D.

Amazon.com
Designed to be a resource for both women who want to maintain breast health and those who've been diagnosed with breast cancer, Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way draws on "women's wisdom," or the inner knowledge often ignored by modern medicine, as a powerful tool for healing. Author Susun Weed proposes an anticancer lifestyle, and, if cancer does enter the picture, a six-step plan for healing (sleep is at zero, or "Do Nothing"; surgery is number six, which she terms "Break and Enter"), with various complementary healing techniques included throughout.
Weed is careful to point out that supplements and herbs can hurt as much as they can help, and she lists several alternative-medicine techniques that should be avoided no matter what. The steps she does recommend--from herbal oils for breast massage to help detect lumps early to the herbs milk thistle, dandelion, and burdock for women with liver damage from tamoxifen--are explained clearly, sometimes with fascinating quotes from centuries-old books on healing.

Weed will draw ire from some readers for recommending that mammograms be avoided. She says they tend to squeeze cancer cells into the bloodstream and can't detect cancer until it's metastatic, which are reasons enough to not have them, and adds that women would be better off by making her suggested anticancer lifestyle changes, paying more attention to their breasts, and performing regular self-exams.

The warnings about the dangers of electromagnetic fields, exposure to estrogen, and organochlorides from plastics may frighten some, but Weed means to enlighten and empower. She dedicates the book to environmentalist and Silent Spring author Rachel Carson and poet Audre Lorde, who both died of breast cancer. Extensive herbal resources, a solid glossary, and a thorough index are included.

From Publishers Weekly
Former professional dancer Lebed Davis was an early advocate of exercise after breast cancer. In 1979, with the help of her two brothers, both physicians, she developed a dance-exercise program to help her mother regain movement in her arm following a mastectomy. Lebed Davis began teaching "Focus on Healing" classes to breast cancer survivors locally, and, following her own diagnosis in 1996, she brought the program to hospitals around the country. Her book, most of which is organized by quality of life issues such as "Emotional Recovery," attempts to bring the program to women at home. Most chapters present clear descriptions of stretches (with accompanying photos), dance routines (with music suggestions) and "healing visualizations or meditations." The "Combating Fatigue" chapter includes stretches such as "The Backstroke," designed to increase shoulder range of motion and limit fatigue from everyday movements. A dance routine offered in another chapter is called "The Showgirl Strut" and involves walking around the room swinging the arms "overhead like a showgirl with attitude." She also describes exercises for strength training and warm-ups for cardiovascular exercise, such as walking. The final section covers broader subjects like nutrition and coping with radiation. Not every reader will appreciate Lebed Davis's encouraging but sometimes unsophisticated tone, and those without dance experience may find it difficult to follow even the simple routines out of a book. Still, some women may find her focus on restoring both flexibility and femininity to be just what they're looking for.

"This book and the program it describes should assist many as they strive for the ultimate goal of therapy--a full, healthful, and active life."

From Publishers Weekly
Thompson became a breast cancer statistic after a routine mammogram revealed a suspicious spot; doctors confirmed it was cancer. This author, founder of Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry at Rick Warren's Saddleback Church, experienced the emotional highs and lows, pain and fatigue, and spiritual crisis and victory that come with breast cancer. She shares her story, plus much more, in a book she envisions as "a safe place to document an epic time in your life." Much of her experience is recorded in letters to God, but she also includes the words of others. "Mentoring Moment" sections offer help and advice about the gritty aspects of breast cancer. Most touching is paraphrased Scripture offered as "God's Love Letter to You." Thompson provides both space and encouragement to journal, and her appendices provide valuable resources such as Web sites and recommended reading, as well as space for recording questions, doctor's appointments, medications, contact information and many other details often lost in the trauma and emotion. Thompson's book is a must for any Christian woman facing breast cancer. It's honest, beautiful and cathartic. (Sept. 26)

Book Description
The best-selling guide to mastectomy and reconstruction has been rewritten and updated. This new 2nd edition of The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook retains all the comprehensive information, descriptions ad explanation of the original issue, along with new information about the lattest implant and flap reconstruction procedures, how to find a surgeon who specializes in these newer techniques and much more. No woman wants to lose her breasts. But having a mastectomy doesn't have to mean living without them. How do you find answers about mastectomy and reconstruction when you're still overwhelmed by your diagnosis and treatment? How real will your new breasts look and feel? What if you don't want implants? How painful is the process? Will your insurance cover all the costs? What is recovery like? The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook has the answers. Easy-to-read text explains mastectomy and demystifies reconstructive options. You'll understand the benefits and risks of different procedures, so you can determine which technique, if any, is right for you. You won't be alone; each chapter includes insights from women who have been through it all.

From the Publisher
Mastectomy is a shocking pronouncement. Your oncologist or surgeon may recommend it to eliminate your breast cancer - who knew that "catching it early" might also mean losing a breast? Perhaps you've decided it's the best way to reduce your risk of developing the disease. Maybe you're trying to decide between lumpectomy and radiation or mastectomy.
Whatever your circumstances, you have alternatives after losing your breast. There are many ways to reconstruct a breast; you can choose which option is right for you. These choices, however, require decisions. Decisions require information.

You won't find answers in this book, but you will find the information you need to make your own decisions. You may decide reconstruction is right for you. You may not. Either way you'll understand the benefits and limitations of each reconstructive technique, and what to expect each step of the way: before your surgery, in the hospital, during recovery, and life beyond reconstruction. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Author
Many cancer patients say their disease was a learning opportunity. That's certainly been my experience. I've heard those four horrible word-"you have breast cancer"-three times, had four biopsies, two lumpectomies, eight weeks of radiation, a sentinel node biopsy, genetic counseling and testing, bilateral mastectomies and reconstruction. While I would never have chosen these particular opportunities for learning, each one, it its own way, gave me more insight into the disease, into myself, and compassion for other women who lose their breasts.

When I went looking for reconstructive options, I hoped to find a book like this. I found plenty of books on breast cancer. Some provided a chapter or two on reconstruction, but none had the comprehensive, objective information I needed. I wanted a single source that didn't favor one technique over the other; something that translated technical terms and procedures into understandable concepts, and explained practical aspects of recovery and life after breast surgery. That single source didn't exist. And that's why I've written this book, to share what I've learned with you and other women who wonder what reconstruction is really like.

To my own mountain of research, I added information from clinical studies and medical journals, and perspectives from oncologists, surgeons, nurses, and other medical professionals. More than 400 women took the time to share their own experiences and offer information they wished they had before reconstruction; many of their comments are included. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

About the Author
Freelance business and health writer Kathy Steligo has heard, "You have breast cancer," three times. While her book is well-researched and applauded by patients and medical professionals alike, she also writes from personal experience, having gone through reconstruction twice. She spoke with more than 500 women while researching the book, along with countless nurses, oncologists, researchers and plastic surgeons.

Book Description
Breast MRI has emerged as a valuable adjunct to the conventional imaging modalities in the detection of primary and recurrent breast cancer. Yet, most radiologists who rely on MRI do not have knowledge of the fundamentals so essential to achieving and maintaining high image quality.

With a focus on the basic imaging principles of breast MRI rather than on mathematical equations, this book takes a practical approach to imaging protocols that helps radiologists increase their diagnostic effectiveness. The text walks the reader through the basics of MRI, making it especially accessible to beginners. From a detailed outline of equipment prerequisites for obtaining high quality breast MRI to instructions on how to optimize image quality, expanded discussions on how to obtain optimized dynamic information, and explanations of good and bad imaging techniques, the book covers the topics that are most relevant to performing breast MRI.

By presenting the key aspects of breast MRI in straightforward terms and with clear images, this practical book benefits all practitioners seeking to increase their working knowledge and competence in breast MRI. It fills an important gap in the literature and is also of value to residents preparing for the diagnostic radiology boards.

From Library Journal
"You have breast cancer." After the initial shock of diagnosis, women are faced with myriad questions about where to go and what to do next. Lange, a Harvard Medical School-trained physician who experienced his wife's battle with the disease, has written an especially user-friendly book for women seeking answers and a measure of hope. Based on his video and CD-ROM programs (Lange, 1997), Be a SurvivorTM follows the stages of treatment and recovery, offering a balanced, accessible text; highlighted topic boxes; excellent, detailed illustrations; and checklists of questions for doctors ("Could you give me the names of specialists you think I should see?"). There are informative sidebars and inspirational photos and quotes from survivors on almost every page. Similar to John Link's The Breast Cancer Survival Manual (LJ 3/1/98), Lange's work also covers reconstruction, alternative therapies, clinical trials, and life after breast cancer. The book ends with a lengthy resource list, a glossary, and an index. Be a SurvivorTM should be the first book women reach for in developing strategies to fight perhaps the biggest battle of their lives.?Bette-Lee Fox, "Library Journal"
