Bra Art Raising Money for Breast Cancer Research

Creative Cups. BraVo! Bling My Bra Beauty and the breast Uplifting Art Artful Bra ... October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Art Bras are a mix of wearable art, survivor/memorial art and feminist art. It's crafting as therapy, as distraction. It's part of the modern quilting bee, where like-minded women, sometimes women who've had similar experiences get together, work on their art and socialize. It's a break for fun and much-needed laughter.

It isn't just women. Men can get breast cancer (the percentages are small), and men will suffer along with the women in their lives who have breast cancer. If you were lucky enough to purchase one of these bras at a charity auction, for instance, you'd be not only be making a donation to a very good cause, but you'd be acquiring a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

Creativity can be a helpful release when one is dealing with a crisis and/or a chronic condition. The muse can seem to take you out of yourself, out of the situation for a while. If it is a group activity, or you're working on a project for a show or an auction, etc, there's an added excitement. If you're going to model your art bra in a fashion show... Well as Tim Gunn says, "Make it work!" Anything that brings joy, beauty, friendship, laughter and often sequins, feathers and applause into the lives of women living with breast cancer is fantastic.

Do you have someone in your life who's been touched by this disease? Check your newspaper and hunt around online for what's happening in your area. There just might be an Art Bra show near you! Happy to say that I noticed that bra art auctions and fashion shows are sometimes sold out -- so make sure to get your tickets early.

Artful Bras: Hooters, Melons and Boobs, Oh My! A Quilt Guild's Fight Against Breast Cancer

For Yourself, A Friend, For Your Coffee Table...

Artful Bras: Hooters, Melons and Boobs, Oh My! A Quilt Guild's Fight Against Breast Cancer

by: Quilters of South Carolina

With the popularity of decorating bras - or "art bras," as they are commonly called - on the rise, Quilters of South Carolina president Sandra Baker issued a challenge to the statewide guild. Sandra had a specific goal: to raise awareness of breast cancer. With so many women of the 650-person guild being affected by breast cancer, it was a natural fit for the group.

So Sandra created the first Artful Bra - "Buttons, Bows and Boobs" - and hit the road. She toured the state visiting quilt guilds, inspiring others to participate in the challenge. At the end of her tour, 41 QSC members answered the call. Some created more than one bra, bringing the total number of Artful Bras to 50.

Before sending the bras out on tour, the women decided to donate all of the money made from the exhibit to the Best Chance Network, a South Carolina program that helps women without insurance pay for breast-cancer screening. Proceeds from this book will also be donated to the BCN.

From November 2008 to October 2009, the Artful Bras exhibit traveled South Carolina. The bras were on display at art museums, garden nurseries, hospitals, conferences, guilds, churches and more. In July, the collection left the state to be displayed at the American Quilter's Society (AQS) show in Knoxville, Tenn. But the bras had a much more far-reaching impact than just South Carolina and Tennessee.

Bev Buchanan, designer of "Look At Them Ther' Watermelons!", was approached by the National Watermelon Growers Association to donate her bra for auction. "Boobs, Beaches and Beyond" was the force that connected designer Pat Perry to several long lost friends who came across her entry in the exhibit. Anne Duncan's "Nursing Bra" and Karen Kendo's "Thelma and Louise: A Pair of Perky Hooters" were featured on the cover of the American Journal of Nursing's April 2009 issue.

Because of the Internet, the Artful Bras received instant attention. Email forwards were sent all over the world with photos of the bras. Bloggers posted stories with links to the Artful Bra website. Sandra received messages from folks all across the United States, as well as in France, the United Kingdom, Australia and beyond. Here's what some had to say:

Barbara H. from Colorado wrote, "This is the most exciting thing I have seen to bring awareness to breast cancer. I hope you will consider the possibility of a national tour - it's that important."

Duncan and Sheila Spencer in Ipswich, England, wrote, "Your 'bras' have proved a great hit here in the U.K. with all our friends being moved by the terrific idea you have come up with. It seems a shame you will only be exhibiting in S.C.; the world needs to be aware of this and other profile raising ideas."

Like Barbara and the Spencers, the project has inspired other groups to take part in similar challenges. A group in Corpus Christi called its art bra challenge "BRAvo," which was on display at the Art Museum of South Texas. Not only did the group expect 30 bras and got 60, it also predicted a turn-out of 500 people on opening night, and instead had more than 2,000 visitors.

Inside, you'll find photographs of each of the 50 decorated bras. You'll also read the designers' stories about the inspiration behind the designs and how they made them.

The goal of Artful Bras: Hooters, Melons and Boobs, Oh My! is Kansas City Star Quilts attempt to bring awareness to breast cancer. We are honored to have worked with the Quilters Guild of South Carolina, and proud to be a part of all that they have done for breast cancer awareness. -- Amazon

Beauty & the Breast: Lunatique Fantastique

PBS public broadcasting TV KQED's program Spark! did a piece on the group and its founder, Liebe Wetzel. On their site you can read more about the troupe and view a video of the segment from about them on Spark!

"In her 2006 project titled Beauty and the Breast, Wetzel, in collaboration with longtime Bay Area theater director Jayne Wenger, broaches the subject of breast cancer. Produced by Exit Theatre, Beauty and the Breast tells the story of Bresty, a bright purple bra who battles breast cancer and makes the difficult decision to have a mastectomy.

"For this production, Wetzel and Jayne Wenger decided to get rid of the black outfits of the puppet manipulators and expose them, a first for a Wetzel production. Other objects, such as a flowerpot, trowels and handkerchiefs, fill out a cast of characters that may never have realized their full potential if Wetzel hadn't come along." -- from the KQED site

Rusty Warren: Knockers Up! The Lady Behind the Laughs: Documentary

Rusty Warren: Knockers Up! The Lady Behind the Laughs

Largely forgotten today, Rusty Warren was a pioneering comedienne who broke down barriers with her frank comedy act discussing sex, long before the era of Phyllis Diller and Lenny Bruce. Best known for her "Knockers Up" party records, Warren, who now resides in Hawaii, was a clasically trained pianist, who one night while improvising with the audience between numbers as a lounge piano player, came up with the routine she is best known for today.

"A nice breezy look at the career of this trailblazer, this documentary seeks to position her in the pantheon of great barrier-breaking comics. The core of the film is a late career Stand-up routine filmed in Las Vegas, and though one wishes for some footage of Rusty in her early 1960's prime, there's priceless early-to-mid seventies footage of Rusty on various talk shows, including one where she delivers a biographical slide-show. A pleasant reminder of a potent talent. -- Kristian St. Clair, Amazon

World Record Bra Chain

A town in south-east Queensland claim to have created a world record chain of ladies' brassieres. A town in south-east Queensland claim to have created a world record chain of ladies' brassieres.

The record attempt was organised by Rob Bauer of Citizens Who Care, a fund raising organisation who support breast cancer charities.

The event took three years to fully organise, the chain contains 166,000 bras and stretches an incredible 163 kilometres which breaks the 2006 record set in Cyprus by a full 51 kilometres.

Bauer says that the bras will now be donated to women in third world countries with many going to the Afghan Women's Association in Afghanistan.

I've also donated 20-odd-thousand to the Afghan Women's Association to go to Afghanistan to one of refuges there, Bauer told Australia's ABC News.

What I set out to do was not only break the record and raise money, but I wanted people to be aware of breast cancer, I wanted women and men to take it on board to either self test or go to the doctors and be tested. If we save one person by doing what we've done we've achieved something.

The record has yet to be verified by the Guinness Book of World Records. -- from the YouTube description

Why I Wore Lipstick: To My Mastectomy :: Incl. Kindle eReader edition

Why I Wore Lipstick: To My Mastectomy Geralyn Lucas

Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy [Kindle edition]

Lucas was 27, happily working as a 20/20 producer, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Suddenly, her world became a blur of appointments with surgeons and emotional breakdowns.

Her book's catchy title belies its substantial content: this is an honest, perceptive memoir from a feisty survivor who's willing to discuss every detail, like getting sick in cabs during chemo treatments, baldness and sex.

In fact, the book opens with Lucas, who's now 36, recounting her visit to a New York topless bar as she agonizes over losing a breast and contemplates reconstructive surgery. Lucas doesn't dismiss her fears; she talks about wanting to have a child and how her husband withdraws when so many other people step in to provide her with emotional support.

What makes her memoir so moving is the author's breezy style and her focus on the daily details of her illness ("I am in the shower, and when I start lathering my comb-over, most of it stays in my hands. The big patches of hair just come out. No warning"). The story of Lucas's recovery, and of the birth of her daughter, make her book surprisingly optimistic and immensely empowering. Breast Cancer Husband :: Incl. Kindle Edtion : Kickin' Cancer to the Curb

Breast Cancer Husband : How to Help Your Wife (and Yourself) during Diagnosis, Treatment and Beyond

Breast Cancer Husband: How to Help Your Wife (and Yourself) during Diagnosis, Treatment and Beyond Kindle eReader Edition

Silver, an editor at U.S. News & World Report, speaks encouragingly in this heartfelt, useful guide for men whose wives or girlfriends have been diagnosed with breast cancer, as was his wife, Marsha, in 2001.

Silver, who consulted with surgeons and oncologists for this book, first helps readers deal with the diagnosis, addressing men's stereotypical reactions (usually saying little, followed by overbearing urges to fix the problem), then advising them how to behave (ask questions and, more importantly, listen).

He nicely interweaves comments from men and women who have gone through breast cancer diagnosis, setting them off with pull quotes and how-to sidebars such as "Husbanding Her Energies" and "Caring for the Caregiver."

His advice is simple and sound: rather than saying "Cheer up, honey, the doctor said things aren't that bad," Silver recommends, "Is there anything I can do to make you feel better?" He discusses the surprisingly numerous cases in which men have left their spouses, discusses the importance of wives having an "appointment pal" and advises on explaining cancer to children.

Silver also smartly examines the various treatments and suggests ways for readers to find sexual intimacy after mastectomy. This guide is an invaluable complement to Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book and John Link's The Breast Cancer Survival Manual. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All she has to do is sign up and have her doctor fax a note confirming the treatment. Cleaning for a Reason will have a participating maid service in her zip code area arrange for the service.

This organization serves the entire USA and currently has 547 partners to help these women. It's our job to pass the word and let them know that there are people out there that care. Be a blessing to someone and pass this information along.

Laura Jacobs' Art Bras

Artist Laura Jacobs' Wallflowers collection consists of specialty art bras. From her site:

"Burn your bra. The phrase doesn't get much voice anymore, as the advancement of feminism is countered by today's ever-present porn industry and freaky surgery makeovers. The surreal circus-like atmosphere in which we live, make the bras of Laura Jacobs no less startling. Incorporating everything from crab claws and fish heads to antique glass and mother of pearl, their wall-borne, gravity-defying flight gives voice to the shapes that lie behind, concealed like soft pills of great potency..."

Celebrity Scarves 2: Hollywood Knits for Breast Cancer Research

Twenty more celebrity knitters, such as David Arquette (the first male featured); Dakota Fanning (of Hide and Seek fame), and Desperate Housewife Felicity Huffman, dish about the scarf patterns they love most. And every one is in pink, as a salute to the fight against breast cancer. What makes this special, beyond the projects and the donated proceeds, are the stories the contributors share.

Andrea Martin, star of TV and Broadway, reveals how she learned to knit at 10 years old at the side of her grandmother, who had fled Turkey after witnessing many tragedies. Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark) presents her Kilim Cross designs, and discusses how antique rugs provide inspiration for her stitching.

Never has a knitting book been so entertaining to read, and so important to buy. -- Amazon
