Breast Enlargement (or Augmentation Mammaplasty)
Breast enlargement is a cosmetic surgery used for enlarging the breast volume in women with the use of breast implants. Today the most advanced implants are used in order to obtain a smooth skin texture and an appearance that is as pleasant as possible. Most implants provide a highly secure care with a small risk of capsular contracture and a nice breast shape.
Breast Enlargement Considerations
This procedure is contraindicated in patients who are breastfeeding (at least 9 months after birth must pass in order to be eligible for the intervention), as well as patients following hormonal treatments or the ones with mastitis and those with severe skin lesions in the area of the breasts. Preoperatively, the patient is asked not to take aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs and to stop consuming alcohol and tobacco.
During preoperative consultation the surgeon must determine how the operation will be performed, including options like the placement of the incision, the volume and shape of breast implants and their location (subglandular or submuscular).
There are three basic incision types that are used as part of the breast enlargement intervention. First of all, the doctor can perform a mammary incision in the fold, which allows him to achieve a safe dissection of the prosthesis pocket with sight hemostasis. It also contributes to an easier introduction of the prostheses and leaves a minor scar that will vanish in time. The other options are periareolar incision, performed in the lower edge of the areola, and the trans-ax incision, which is however associated with a difficult pocket dissection process.
Breast enlargement surgery is performed under general anesthesia with continuous monitoring of patients after incision of skin. The breast pocket is carefully dissected, after which the implant is placed in the position established during the first consultation. At the end of the operation drain tubes are mounted in order to avoid hematoma or seroma. Hospitalization is 1-3 days after surgery, during which the patient receives antibiotics, pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medicines in order to relieve pain.
Stitches are removed within 14 days, during which the patient should present to a specialized clinic for a new medical control. Immediately after the intervention, postoperative complications are bleeding, hematoma formation or accumulation of serous fluid. A late complication is capsular contracture appearance, which is unpredictable. It is recommended for the patient to wear bra permanently for at least 2-3 months after surgery in order to avoid further complications.
