Breast Lift Guide
The breast lifting surgery consists of excision of excess skin in order to lift the breasts. Since the areola can be lowered and enlarged, it will be repositioned to a normal level and its size will be reduced. This intervention will result in a rejuvenated appearance of the patient's body, with high and firm breast. This intervention is designed for women who want to improve their breast shape and position. If they also want to increase the volume of the breasts, a special implant will also be used as part of the operation.
Breast Lift Surgery
Although the functionality of the breasts will not generally be affected, women who want a future pregnancy should discuss this with the plastic surgeon. Changes during pregnancy can reduce or even cancel the effect of breast lift surgery. In addition to this, planning a future weight loss diet should be considered. For these reasons women with normal, stable body weight and fully developed breasts are considered ideal candidates for this intervention.
Using incisions the breast is lifted and reshaped to improve its consistency. The nipple and areola will be repositioned to a normal level, making the breast look younger. If necessary, the areola will be enlarged or reduced in size. The excess skin is eventually removed to compensate the loss of elasticity. In all cases incisions are usually placed so as to be concealed by clothing or bathing suits. Absorbable sutures are used to create and sustain the new breasts. Sometimes, in order to evacuate any accumulation of blood (hematoma), a temporary drain is also used.
Possible risks of breast lift surgery are hematoma, infection, poor healing of incisions and scars. As with any surgery, risks associated with the general anesthesia are also present. After finishing surgery incisions are dressed and a special bra is applied to reduce swelling after surgery. This breast support also helps reducing the duration of the healing process. The initial phase of healing may include swelling, inflammation and discomfort. Discomfort and pain are common to any surgery and can be controlled with special medications. It is recommended that the patient wears the bra for a couple of weeks before the operation.
Te initial wound healing process takes for 1-2 weeks, at which point the suture threads will be extracted. The patient can resume normal activities and work as long as there is no high amount of physical effort involved. The healing process continues in the coming weeks, until swelling and scarring are completely eliminated.
