Breast Reconstruction Surgery
Breast reconstruction after mastectomy is used to reconstruct the breast shape and volume and build ideal breasts for every patient. It is done preferably a few months after mastectomy, after a few series of checkups (mammograms, and some other important tests) demonstrating the absence of metastasis.
Breast Reconstruction Surgery Information
In general, patients have a high degree of psychological vulnerability and a low level of tolerance to other major surgeries after undergoing mastectomy. Therefore, you should try to imagine breast reconstruction as a simple, painless procedure using breast implants. Two sessions are usually required in order to achieve the desired results, but there should be a significant difference between them in order to facilitate healing. Fat can be harvested through liposuction if the patient wants to also have the size of their breasts reduced. However, no more then 100-150cc should be extracted per session in order to avoid dangerous complications. In case the patient wants to achieve a higher volume, the implant is inserted in the plane of autologous skin and chest wall with the help of liposuction cannulas.
This maneuver has the dual purpose of "training" the flap of the skin. The skin flap will have to accept the breast implant and on the other hand, there is the thickening of the hypodermis breast area. After these two conditions are met, a tissue expander is inserted in gradual steps. The final result will only be obtained after a period of approximately 1-2 months.
Some of the most important advantages of breast reconstruction surgery consist of the lack of local and general aggressiveness of surgical steps (all interventions are ambulatory and hospitalization is not needed for more than one day). The disadvantages are related to the need for the presence of excess fat, the costs of the implant and the long time for this treatment.
