Physically
Look for the following traits in the fish you plan to buy, which indicates a healthy fish:
- The betta have deep and rich body colors
- The betta fins should be either long and flowing, or short and erect
- The betta have clear eyes
- The betta have a well-rounded stomach
- The scales are flat and smooth
- Visible fish waste that is dark
- Body of normal girth
Pay close attention to the fish body. Make sure there is no visible:
- External parasites, such as ich (small white dots) or velvet (a dusty gold mist)
- Ulcers, boils or any noticeable skin problems
- Scars or wounds
