Breeding Tokay geckos in Captivity

Here is a more in depth look into the care and breeding of tokay geckos.I'll cover everything from getting them in the mood to the husbandry of your hatchlings. Though this lens is dedicated to tokays most of this will apply to other reptiles.

The Start of Breeding Tokays

Where to Beginbright eyed

Your tokay geckos will become sexually mature around one year of age.I will assume that your geckos are healthy and in a well set-up vivarium.

At this point you should begin to establish different areas that may become egg laying spots. Have branches and corks that can be easily removed for egg incubation if that is what you choose.

Keep in mind that the eggs will be glued to whatever they are laid on. If you try to take them off you will break them and all your hard work will be for nothing. A good idea is to place some plastic around the inside of the cage. That way, if she lays them on the glass you can still remove them.

First things First

Setting the mood for Your Tokay geckostokay gekko gecko baby

It has been my experience that not much has to be done for breeding Tokays. I have never had to alter the light or temperature cycles but others have.

You will notice that your male tokay will get quite more vocal as the breeding cycle arrives.tokay gekko gecko babyThis is part of the tokays mating ritual, calling out to the females.

If you seem to have trouble getting your tokays to mate, you may want to try adjusting the photocycle a bit. Move the temperature down 5°F, reduce the humidity, take 1-2 hours of light away, and reduce the available food supply for a couple weeks.

Then take everything back to normal, except for a little higher humidity. Try for around 70-75%. This replication of a natural spring should encourage your geckos to mate.

So now all your hard work to this point has paid off. You got eggs laid and the excitement is there. Now is the hard part, waiting.

Your Tokay females will lay between 3-4 two egg clutches a year. You could leave the eggs where they are as your Tokay has found a suitable temperature and humidity in the enclosure. If you choose to incubate them someplace else take the article on which there laid.Remember you'll break them if you try to take them off!

Your incubator should have a temperature of 80-86°F. You should place the the eggs in slightly moist vermiculite. The sexes of your tokay geckos are also determined by the temperature.tokay gekko gecko eggs Higher temps are usually males, while cooler ones make females.

The eggs will incubate for at least 60 to at most 200 days. You usually will have babies between 90 and 120 days. Just be patient!

You have waited a long time for these little guys and now you got to keep them alive. Good husbandry is essential here for your babies. The less unnatural stress the better.

A small 10 gallon tank with the basics will work fine now. Basic carpet, branches, and cork hideaways so you can see that there eating, their overall health, and growth.tokay gekko gecko baby hatchling

Tokay gecko hatchlings are around 4 inches long.Your baby tokay should eat pinhead crickets easily and regularly. Make them readily available at all times!

Check the tank for any crickets that may have grown. I have had the misfortune of losing a gecko due to a cricket that became an adult and lethally injured my gecko.
