I lost my first son at 21 weeks due to prom (premature rupture of membranes) in 2001. The doctors were never able to say why it happened . The following year I got pregnant again with a second boy. At 27 weeks I developed severe preclampsia...HELLP Syndrome, and had to deliver via emergency c section. My son was born weighing 1 pound 10 ounces. He has struggled through many complications, but thankfully now he is a 9 year old, healthy boy. I never could get answers as to why I struggled with my pregnancies, until several months ago. My sister was also recently struggling with early miscarriages, and saw a genetic specialist. He ran some tests, and determined she had a MTHFR gene mutation. The doctor told her that he recommended me to also be tested, and I did. I also tested positive for the mutation. Though I am not sure if I will ever try to have any more children, I did find some comfort in getting some answers.

I have had slightly high blood pressure since birth (my mother also had hypertension and pre eclampsia during my gestation). My blood pressure was slightly elevated at my very first OB exam and slowly got higher through out my pregnancy. Everything took a turn for the worst at 22 weeks, with moderate best rest, quitting my job and multiple trip to the triage unit at the hospital I was able to hold off until 37 weeks when our daughter was born via emergency c-section. I remained in the hospital for nine days afterwards. I threw a clot and nearly had a stroke. It was one of the most terrifying experiences my husband or I have ever gone through.

I was diagnosed with preeclampsia at 36 weeks, put on bedrest, had non-stress tests twice weekly, and at 38.5 weeks woke up short of breath, went in that morning for a routine office visit, was sent to the hospital to be induced, just as I got to the hospital 2 miles away I went in to heart failure, and respiratory failure, my daughter was born via emergency c-section and I was on a ventilator for 2 days, I came within 30 minutes of dying ,per my doc.
It was horrible and I lost the first 2 days of my daughter's life, and have no memories of her first 2 days or a "first impression" of seeing her, but the Lord's hand was on both of us that day and we are both alive and healthy (she had no complications) and for that I will always be grateful. I was told by my ob/gyn as well as the cardiologist that I should NEVER have any more children.
