Are you a brick lover? A number of people are. A lot of us like doing our own thing when it comes to home decoration like painting our walls and laying our own bricks. Because we are not professionals we sometimes do not get it quite right or the job is not done as cleanly as a professional.
If you have tried laying your own red bricks on your patio or your drive way you may find that the tiles are all messy and grayish if you used a cement base grout. Even with you best effort of wiping and scrubbing they remain grayish. and the dream of a walk way of beautiful red tiles is shattered because you have these disgusting grayish reddish bricks and you curse the day you did not hire a professional brick layer. No need to be too depressed here is a method of getting your bricks cleaned from concrete grout.
You may remove the dry residue first by scrubbing with a ½ cup of trirodium phosphate and ½ cup house hold detergent dissolved in 1 gallon of water.
Scrub with a stiff plastic brush do not use wire brush it will damage the tiles. Wash off all cleaning solution including dirt, crumbs and mortar thoroughly water. If the condition still persists use a solution of muriatic acid which is recommended for removing hardened. Mix 1 part acid to 10 parts clean water.
Be extremely cautious when using acids mixtures. Always mix in a non-metallic container. Pour the acid in the water not the water on the acid. Be careful not to get splashed by the acid as this could give serious burns. Wear old clothes rubber gloves and goggles when applying acid mixtures.
Here is something to bear in mind, bricks are made from different types minerals and may react differently to different acid solutions. It is important to test the acid on an inconspicuous spot before applying to the whole area. An acid use on bricks with high copper content will turn them green. An acid should never be used on light coloured bricks. After cleaning neutralize the brick with household ammonia followed by ample rinsing. When brick are thoroughly rinsed and dry apply a masonry sealer which are sold available in either coloured or clean solutions that can enhance the red colour of your bricks

N.B. Never throw remaining acid solution down your drain.
Procedure:
1. Prepare solution as stated above.
2. Flush off mortar and dirt with plenty of clean fresh water
3. Pre-soak the area of bricks to be cleaned with plenty of water before applying the acid, this enables the acid to dissolves and the mortar will not be drawn into the face of the bricks.
4. Apply the acid solution with a rag mop so that it can soak into the bricks.
5. Leave the mixture to act for a few minutes then flush off with clean water.
6. Scrap off any hardened cement with a putty knife.
When dried you should be please you will have your beautiful red brick walk way.
