A Beautiful, Colorful Wedding

When I was getting married, the one decision I agonized over was what color of bridesmaid dress I wanted for my bridesmaids. I ended up choosing yellow for my summer wedding, but to this day I wonder what my wedding photos would have looked like if I had decided on another color. This article is a guide to choosing a color for your bridesmaid dresses, and how to find dresses in a particular color once you've decided.

Deciding On a Color

What is your favorite color? If you know the answer to that question, that you (probably) have an answer to what color you should pick for your bridesmaids. At least, it is a starting point. You may also want to consider the time of year that your wedding will take place, as well as what colors will look good on your bridesmaids. Think about their skin tones, and what colors they usually wear. Of course, if you are the bride, then YOU get to decide. Don't let your bridesmaids, or anyone else, decide for you.

Here are some considerations:

*Red is the color of love and romance. It's the perfect choice if you want red roses in your wedding. Red looks especially good on pale skin tones. (Think Snow White.) It also makes sense in an autumn or winter wedding. You could even do red and green for a Christmas wedding, if you are gutsy enough.

* Orange is an unusual choice, so if you are looking to be original, it might be the choice for you. Orange dresses would look stunning among the golden leaves of autumn. Orange can look particularly good on darker skinned women.

* Yellow is the color I chose, because it such a sunny, happy color. To me, yellow works best in the summer. Just be careful that the dress you choose doesn't make your bridesmaids look washed-out (which can happen if they have fair skin).

* Green is a lovely color for spring or summer. It has recently been a popular choice, according to a woman I spoke to in the bridal industry. Green might be a particularly good choice if you are planning to have a "green" (environmentally friendly) wedding.

* Blue is an always popular color. Almost everybody looks good in blue. It also looks good year-round. Blue reminds me of a bright blue summer sky, but also of wintry blue ice.

* Purple is like an edgier blue. If you like blue but want something a little bit different, consider purple. Lilac is an especially popular shade.

* Brown. A surprising number of brides choose brown as the main color for their wedding. I think the reason is that it can look quite sophisticated if done right. It is also a very natural color.

* Black contrasts perfectly with white, so if the bride has a pure white gown, you can get some truly stunning photos! Just make sure your wedding doesn't end up looking like a funeral by accident.

Finding The Dress

First of all, you shouldn't limit yourself by assuming that all of your bridesmaids will wear the exact same dress. You might be able to choose variations on a particular dress. Many lines of bridesmaid gowns come in standard colors, so each bridesmaid can wear the same color but in a slightly different style. This works very well when your bridesmaids come in different sizes, because not all dress styles flatter all sizes. You can also choose to have your bridesmaids wear different colors, but that's a little harder to pull off.

You can search for bridemaid dresses by color at the David's Bridal web site, or on theknot.com. If you are interested in finding an exact match to a particular color, I recommend a site called Afashionado.com. Here are some links to bridesmaid dresses by color on Afashionado:
