A Simple Explanation of Cancer

Cancer, also known as malignant tumor and carcinoma,  is a disease that is caused by mutated cells.  These changed cells have no purpose in the body except to cause havoc.  Left untreated, they will reproduce and spread preventing normal healthy cells from doing their job and destroying organs along the way.

Cancer can be caused by a variety of condition some referred to as carcinogenic agents:  certain chemicals, radiation, some poisons, even some processing agents used to produce food!   Other causes:  prolonged sun exposure, tobacco, asbestos, and certain viruses.  This list can cause even the most optimistic to be nervous! Unfortunately, scientists are still discovering more ways to develop cancer, but the good news is that  they are also discovering more ways to treat cancer and prolong life.

They are ways to reduce your changes of developing cancer that also has a positive effect on a healthier lifestyle.    Here is a short list:

         1.  Get a good night's sleep.  When you sleep your immune system is doing very important work!  It is during sleep that your body performs self-maintenance and the immune system recharges itself.   This is important because the immune system is what protects you from cancer, among other illnesses.

         2.  Eat a variety of foods from a variety of sources and keep those foods as close to nature as possible.  The body is like your car, you must give it a good source of fuel in order to function optimally.  If your food is loaded with chemicals and preservatives, then the body has to work harder to process and remove those toxins.

         3.  Reduce and eliminate stress.  Stress can trigger many conditions including cancer.  Read more on this in my lense on stress.

         4.  Be happy, have some fun!  It is true that people who are happier and have a more positive outlook on life have stronger immune systems and recovery periods.

          5.  Practice prevention!  Don't wait to seek medical care until it is too late.  Cancer is almost 100% treatable when caught early on.   Just like maintaining your car so should you maintain your body by having annual checkups:  PAP smears, mammograms, skin checks (of moles and suspecting skin changes), and oral checks of the inside of the mouth and under the tongue.

The sad truth is that you can develop cancer at anytime, at anyplace in the body.  So be attentive!  Report any of the following changes to your doctor immediately:   bloody stools, cough that won't go away, lumps or bumps, mouth sores, unexplained fevers, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, and changes in moles or birth marks.   Cancer is not the death sentence it once was.

Don't be a participant in your health but an active partner.  You'll be glad you did!

Personality Type C for Cancer

Are you a Type C?

Dr. Linda Mundorff, MPH,MSN,ND,RN,CNC,CTN

It is inevitable, we all know of someone who has recently been diagnosed with cancer, struggled with cancer, or succumbed to cancer. But what is cancer? Is it a disease? Is it triggered by a severe viral infection? Is cancer a cellular disorder or some awful misguided rogue cell? Is it a result of a suppressed immune system? Although modern science is just starting to truly understand how cancer forms, we also know that there is a high susceptibility from environmental triggers.
Researchers have identified a Type C personality, which refers to a personality type more susceptible to cancer. The Type C personality is a consumer of a diet high in sugar, high in saturated/trans-fats, and high in processed and refined foods. Type C people are overweight, overworked, and overstressed. They tend to suppress their emotions, put everyone else's feelings before their own, and quietly stew about it. Frankly, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that anyone who lives the lifestyle of a Type C personality is going to be prone to not only cancer but also a whole host of conditions and potentially life-threatening diseases. If you think you are a Type C person, you
might want to read this book twice.
Researchers have also found a significant genetic predisposition to cancer, and you can't run or hide from genes. Some say it all boils down to immunity. Some individuals are blessed with an immune system that surpasses the abilities of all the military branches of the United States. Then there are those who are like Third World countries-they are thankful to make it through another
day without incident. Scientific advances in longevity studies have also led to
discoveries of new forms of cancer. Unfortunately, the longer you live, the
greater the opportunity for one of your billions of cells to mutate and become
cancerous. In addition to the Type C personality, other cancer profiles have
been developed.
How do you combat a profile? Perhaps that is why I don't like profiles. I would much prefer to think that I have some control of my environment. And if you give in to profiling, you might as well give in to hopelessness and despair. Individuals who tend to get sick are the ones who make themselves sick by obsessive worrying. Personality Type C for Cancer - Part II

Ruth was a friend of the family while I was growing up. From the moment I could understand what she was saying until today (she is eighty-five and still kicking), she was terrified of getting cancer. She has lived to see loved ones get cancer, but she herself has never had it. She has made herself sick worrying about it. You can't stop what is already in place; the simple fact of the matter is you are a human being with human frailties.
We don't live forever; as we age our immune system becomes less responsive, producing fewer of the fighting powerhouses of specialized killing cells. I am not saying to just sit back and let whatever is going to happen, happen. What I am trying to say is that you should enjoy your life. No one really knows how long we have on this planet. You could be the model of perfect health and die tomorrow in a car accident. Wouldn't it be better to die knowing that you have done all that you wanted, seen all that you wanted, loved, and were loved?
Don't be one of the ones who focuses on regrets and missed opportunities.
When it is time to die, we should all die in peace and tranquility.

In health and wellness!

Linda

I Don't Understand Doctor, What Did You Say I Have?

Medical Terminology: Basic Cancer Terms

Cyst: Fluid-filled sac under the skin.
Tumor (Neoplasm): An abnormal growth of tissue (mass) that can be felt (palpated). Tumor is classified as either benign or malignant.
Benign: A tumor that is not cancerous.
Malignant: A tumor that is cancerous.
Cancerous: Causes cancer.
Carcinogen: That which can produce or increase the chances of developing cancer.
Carcinoma: A cancerous tumor that can be found anywhere in the body.
Cancerous Tumor: A malignant growth.
Invasive: Tendency of the tumor to spread to nearby cells, tissues, or organs.
Metastasis (mets): The spread or movement of cancer cells from one part of the body to another.
TNM Staging: Process of classifying tumors based on degree of tissue involvment. T= tumor size and involvement, N= Lymph node involvement, M= Level of metastasis.
Grade: Tumors can be graded from I-IV. Grading is based on the degree of cellular appearance. The higher the grade the more serious the tumor and more difficult to treat.
Lymph nodes: Are clusters of cells found in the lymphatic system that function to filter out foreign matter such as bacteria, viruses, cellular debris. Cancer cells usually migrate (move) away from a tumor site through the lymphatic system and become trapped in one of these lymph nodes.
Lymphoma: Tumor found in the lymphatic system.
Malginant Lymphoma: Cancerous tumor of lymphatic tissue found in the lymphatic system.
In Situ: (Primary site) The site where the cancer started.
Epidermis: The other layer of the skin (that which you can see and touch).
Melanoma: or Malignant Melanoma. Skin cancer caused by an overgrowth of Melanin (pigment forming part of the skin).
Remission: Period of time when signs and symptoms of the disease are no longer present. This does not mean a cure, condition can come back.
5-year mark: If cancer does not return within 5 years of initial diagnoses than there is a good chance the cancer will not return.

What Happens After Cancer is Gone?

When my girlfriend was 35 years-old she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a radical mastectomy and several rounds of chemotherapy. Afterwards, she experienced fatigue, hair loss, anorexia, and depression. During her year-end check-up she was told by her physician that the cancer was gone. Overcome with joy, she and her family counted their blessings and continued on with their lives. Although it took her a couple of years to "feel better," she never complained as she was so thankful to have the cancer gone. When she turned 40 she found a lump in her other breast. After blood work and a biopsy she was told that the cancer "came back." "It was probably from the chemotherapy you had 5 years ago.." she was told. Now facing another radical mastectomy, and more chemotherapy she feared she would not be around to see her teenage children become adults.
Over 10 million Americans are survivors of cancer. However many of these cancer survivors are survivors of not one episode of cancer but two or more. The second bout of cancer usually results from a malignant in situ that metastasized years later, from the very cancer treatment that was supposed to cure the malignancy in the first place. There are constant debates over the effectiveness of cancer treatments, and whether the 5-year-survival-rate is still accurate, in terms of cancer cure success. Over the years studies have concluded that cancer survivors who make it to the 5-year-mark have a greater chance of beating cancer than their counterparts who have reoccurring malignant tumors in less than five years. People today can enjoy a life expectancy of 76; however with the increase life expectancy often comes the potential for an increase in cancer rates. Some reports have stated that 1 out of every 3 individuals will be diagnosed with some form of cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, those over the age of 65 are at greater risk for cancer, and statistics show that 1 out of 6 will live with some form of cancer. The cancer epidemic is paramount.
One would think that surviving cancer is a good thing. However, it is misleading to assume that cancer is cured just because clinical symptoms are gone. Cancer can lay dormant for years, before clinical evidence has surfaced. In addition, once in the lymphatic system (cancer) can have access to any part of the body, where seeding becomes an easy endeavor. (continued below)

What Happens After Cancer is Gone? Part II

Not only are there greater risks of new cancer growths but many cancer survivors complain of ongoing health problems, after the cancer diagnosis has been resolved. Complaints such as: fatigue, depression, and a lack of appetite for example have been documented. Experiencing cancer is a rude-awakening for many survivors, who choose to leave jobs and families in search for a complete life. Now faced with high divorce rates, cancelled insurance plans, and isolation, many cancer patients feel alone and scared of an uncertain future.
There are many cancer treatment facilities all over the United States. However there are very little, to no post-cancer support centers. It is this author's belief that what is needed are not just cancer treatment facilities but facilities whereby cancer survivors are provided post care support in areas such as: mental health, physical and spiritual strengthening, and stress management, to name a few. Lance Armstrong, a survivor of testicular cancer, has spear-headed a movement towards survivorship centers.
His foundation, called "Live Strong" is helping to raise money for cancer survivor care and research. His cancer was made public a few years back when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer during one of his major bike races. He beat the cancer and he has gone on to win many bike races. Currently, he is sponsoring the yellow bracelet, which can be purchased in many convenient stores and helps support his cause for cancer survivor care research. Together we can make a difference in helping cancer survivors live healthier emotional lives.

NEW INTERNET RADIO TALK SHOW - MAY 27, 2009 at 7:00pm Pacific Time

LIVING A HEALTHIER LIFE

hosted by Dr. Linda Mundorff, MPH, MSN, ND, RN, CNC, CTN

Living a Healthier Life is an exciting new talk show whose primary focus is to explore healthier alternatives to care for the mind, body, and spirit. One major focus of the show will be to develop an appreciation for how the body works, as it is difficult to treat properly something that you do not understand. In the end, it is all about becoming a self-advocate in health care and learning to recognize the signs of poor medical care.
Your host, Dr. Mundorff has over 28 years combined experience as a seasoned Registered Nurse, Naturopathic Doctor, and an Associate Professor. She has seen it all, from the patients who expect doctors to "fix" their medical problems, to the doctors that often misdiagnose diseases, and fail to treat those conditions properly. The harsh realities of medical errors combined with Mundorffs life experiences -her mother and sister both died in their forties from complications following misdiagnoses-have led her to realize doctors and patients have to actively work together to provide the best care possible.
