What to Do About Stains
Pretreat, of course! Use borax or another stain solution. Pay attention to visible stains as well as other problem areas - collar, neckline, cuff, armpits. Some substances (body oils, deoderant, perfume) can discolor the garment over time, even if you don't see them.Photo credit: alyssa snyder
Laundering the White Items
1. Wash shirts by hand in cold water or in the machine with others whites. To counteract yellowing, use a non-chlorinated whitener - such as OxiClean Free Versatile Stain Remover (see Amazon section for link).2. Do not use bleach as it weakens fibers. Also avoid dry-cleaning cotton or linen as the chemicals used in the cleaning process can yellow a white item after several cleanings.
2. Sunlight is a natural whitener so hang your whites out to dry unless your garmnet is silk, polyeaster or Lycra. Hang these inside instead.
