Start Building Baby's Personal Library with a Bring a Book Baby Shower

One of the very best gifts you can give a child is the gift of reading. Literacy is the essential tool for a successful life, and a love of books is a love that will last a lifetime. So why not start early, by beginning to build baby's personal library before he or she is even born, with a Bring A Book Baby Shower?

Back in the day before themed parties were such a big thing, we had plain vanilla baby showers. The decorations were mixed pink and blue because we didn't know ahead of time if it would be a boy or a girl. And all the decorations, refreshments, and games, were pretty much alike. Even the gifts were predictible. Except for the ones I brought.

Even decades ago, I usually gave books as shower gifts. And I was almost always the only one. I'm not sure they were as appreciated as the cute little bibs or frilly dresses or little denim sneakers, but I always gave them anyway. Today book baby showers are beginning to catch on. Some are requesting each guest bring a book instead of a card.

If I were throwing a shower for a mother-to-be today, it would be a Bring a Book Baby Shower.

A Bring A Book Baby Shower

Is a Good Way to Start Baby's Own Personal Library

Children should have their own library - a collection of books that are their very own. Yes, even before they can read.

Children with ready access to their own books are more likely to develop an early interest in reading than those who do not. A Bring-A-Book baby shower is a great way to help a mother-to-be start her child's library, so that bay already has the beginnings of one right from birth.

Bring a Book Instead of a Card

Shower Invitation Inserts

Here's another nice idea that is beginning to catch on. Suggest to prosepctive guests that they not bring a card, but a book instead. There are so many fairly inexpensive books for babies available that are only a little more than the price of a card.

A nice way to make this suggestion is with an insert into the invitation. Here's a cute bring a book insert for shower invitations that requests books in lieu of cards. They come in a pack of 100 for just 18.95

Decorating for Your Bring A Book Shower

Be creative in decorating for a bring a book shower. You might tape up bright magazine covers from old copies of children's magazines, like Highlights. Or look at your local dollar store for 'bookworm cutouts and posters. Ask your local library if they have any left over posters from past learn to read campaigns.

ANOTHER IDEA:
Use a book poster or reading poster as part of your decorating, and have all the guests sign it as a gift for the new mother.

Or, decorate in a theme that is universally recognized as one of the most important authors of books for early readers: Dr. Seuss. Dr Seuss decorations are available from a number of places, including Amazon.

When Should You Start Reading to Your Child?

How Soon is Too Soon?

How soon should you start reading to your child? TODAY, if not sooner!
How soon is too soon? Probably prior to conception.

Seriously, children should be read to from the earliest possible age. Reading to infants helps them become comfortable with the sound and rhythm of the written word, even if they aren't quite ready for the concepts yet.

I've seen it recommended that babies be read to for 5 to 6 minutes a day; and that Kindergarteners be read to for 20 minutes a day, five days a week. I always read to my daughter for much longer than that. Perhaps It depends on the child, and what their attention span will allow, but I think more is better.

What Good Does it do to Read to Your Baby?

A LOT!

I'm not an expert in this field, but I can tell you what happened with my own daughter:

I began reading to her twice a day when she was three days old.

At three years old, she climbed onto my lap with a book, and said, "Mommy, teach me to read."

Before she was five, she could read a restaurant menu, and do her own ordering.

When she entered first grade, she was reading - and discussing - stories from the newspaper.

When Should you start building your child their own library?

Question:
When Should you start building your child their own library?
Answers:
If you want to have children some day, now is good.
If you are expecting your first, it's time you got started.
If you have a child who doesnt have a personal library, you have some catching up to do!

I've always believed a book is a great gift for a child. That's what mine always got. When we went through some lean times, I always found a way to buy her a book, even if I had to give up something I needed. It was that important.

To this day, I can ask her what she wants for Christmas, and she will give me the title and author of a book. And she's now in her 40's!

Guess what? The teen-aged grandkids are the same way. But. they usually ask for a gift card to Barnes & Nobel or Books-A-Million.

The Nursery of a Future Reader

Give a child the gift of books and learning from the day he or she is born!

Include a vision of reading to your child, and one of your child becoming an avid reader when you set up their nursery. It will pay off in a life long habit that will be every bit as important to your child's intellectual growth as nutrition is to their physical well being.

A "reading corner" in the nursery will remind you that you are your child's first and best teacher. A few items will go a long way to establishing a tone your child will appreciate even when they are grown.

Do (did you) Read to Your Baby or Toddler?

What is (or was) your child's favorite book for you to read to them?
What was your favorite book as a child?
Would you like to say something about the importance of books in a young child's life?
Of course, you can just say 'hello.' That would be appreciated, too.

I had a book-themed baby shower and the guests brought books instead of cards. It was so great! I got so many books and cherish everybody's little messages inside of them. I am huge on books for children. My daughter loves Where the Wild Things Are. She relates to Max :)
