An escape to an island paradise is high on the list when it comes to the pursuit of a perfect vacation. Carefree days lounging on the beach - a tropical drink in hand - with palm trees swaying in the breeze, is just about heaven on earth for many people. Add the allure of duty-free shopping and there is no way you are going to come home without a souvenir from your island getaway. If you're the type who prefers tropical art over a T-shirt, you may snag a beautiful painting or exotic wood carving to use as a focal point in a sunroom or bedroom at home.

But even if you can't get away to the islands, you can bring that island feeling home with a selection of tropical wall art that will let you slip away to an island vacation state-of-mind whenever you choose. Decorating any room in the house with tropical flair will offer you a great escape at a moment's notice. Start with a focal point and build on it. Here are some suggestions:

Tropical Paintings and Prints

Choose from canvas oil paintings of beach scenes, depictions of macaws, turtles, fish, tropical fruits and palms, or coral reefs for a focal point that focuses on the natural beauty of island life. Or choose idyllic boats bobbing in the harbor or a beachcomber's hut on a deserted strand of beach and a tropical sunset in all its glory. Original paintings in oils, acrylics or watercolors each lend a different texture and feeling to canvas art, from dramatic to lighthearted. Or select a series of unframed canvas art panels that can fill an entire wall in any configuration that suits your fancy and the size of your space.

High-quality prints are a more affordable option and if they are beautifully framed and matted they can stand on their own or be grouped with other smaller pieces of wall artwork. Dimensional prints, such as botanical prints of palms or hibiscus blooms, add texture and depth to a wall.

Tropical Sculptures: From Carved Wood to Metal Wall Art

If you'd like to add a three dimensional effect to your walls, consider wooden wall art with an exotic motif. For example, inhabitants of the Polynesian islands are famous for their tiki sculptures and masks, while the Balinese depict island life in the form of intricate wooden plaques and reliefs. The exotic woods and their subjects will easily lend a tropical feel to any space. Use them to complement a painting or a grouping of framed prints.

Metal wall art is an outstanding choice for creating an impressive focal point in a tropical room. Palm trees and leaves, island birds, boats, fish, flowers and foliage are just the beginning. Against a pale wall, dark metal finishes will stand out creating shadow and depth, especially if combined with candle wall sconces in coordinating finishes. Add scented candles in fragrances such as coconut, jasmine, or hibiscus to complete the transformation from ordinary room to island escape.
