Bringing Home a New Kitten

We recently added a new member to our family, a three month old black and white female kitten, named Oreo. I wasn't sure if adding a kitten to our family was the right decision because we have young kids, but it worked out great!

She loves all the attention she is getting from our whole family. She starts purring as soon as you touch her and doesn't stop until you put her down. She is great with the kids. She lets them pick her up and loves when they play with her.

A cat can be a great addition to any family. If you have decided to add a new kitten to your family, congratulations! Before you go get your new kitten and bring her home make sure you get all the supplies she'll need first.

Supply List for Your New Kitten

  • Kitten food- When you first get your kitten home it's best to use the same brand of food the previous owner fed them. If you want to switch brands of food do it slowly mixing a little more of the new brand in each day. Be careful using the cheaper brands of cat/kitten food. They can be bad for the kittens health because they don't meet all the kittens nutritional needs and can be harmful to the kittens body over time. Premium, all natural kitten food is the better choice for the long-term health of your kitten.
  • Food/water bowls
  • Litter box, cat litter, and litter scoop- There are three main kinds of cat litter, crystal cat litter, clumping cat litter, and natural pine cat litter. Crystal cat litter is a good choice for those of you who are gone a lot and are not able to clean daily. Clumping cat litter is easy to clean but some brands don't have very good odor control. Natural pine cat litter is a little harder to clean out but overall it has the better odor control.
  • Cat bed- You can either make your own cat bed or purchase one at the store. Kittens like to have a cozy bed to sleep in that has a place for them to hide out. Some popular types of cat beds are basket style, cubes, and tent style.
  • Cat toys- Kittens are like children, they get bored easily. Make sure to offer them a variety of fun toys that they can play with.
  • Collar w/ tags -Make sure you have your address and phone number on your tags in case your kitten ever gets lost.
  • Pet carrier- For when you bring your kitten home and when you take him/her to the vet.

Here's Oreo! Isn't she cute?

My Kitten is Home, Now What?

Once you have all your kitten supplies at home and set up, you are now ready to take your new pet carrier and bring your new kitten home. It's best to let your new kitten slowly get used to you and your family and her new home for the next few days. It took my new kitten two to three days before she would even come out from under the bed, but now she is all over the place playing and exploring her new home.

Some other supplies you might want to think about eventually getting your kitten include vitamins, brush, cat nail clippers, cat toothbrush with pet toothpaste, catnip, ear cleaner, and a scratching post (so they don't tear up your furniture). Cats can make wonderful pets. Enjoy your new kitten!

What a great article. I haven't had a cat since Patches past away many, many years ago. But often think I should get another one.

We have a senior cat and added a new (feral) kitten before Christmas. It's been an educational experience to say the least. It's been 14 years since we had a kitten in the house. Itty bitty gets along great with the dog but not so great with senior kitty. :(

Your kitten is adorable. We have two cats. One just turned a year old. They are great together and are both so friendly. Great info.
