Vintage as I see it
Why is it that I would rather a 1950's Pauline Trigere coat to chase away the winter chill over all other present day designers or department store's finest? Well I guess it is for the same reason that I spent one full day of my winter vacation in Florida at the 10,000 square foot vintage warehouse C. Madeleine in Miami. Aside from the timeless beauty, often impeccible tailoring and special look of eras past, what really enraptures me has something to do with being able to physically touch the decades past.
That lovely bias cut Art Deco dress from 1935 not only has a story to tell it lived that story as well. Perhaps while donning this frock its original owner took in the Marx Brother's movie A Night at the Opera, first learned that Howard Hughes slashed the speed record, or heard the radio broadcast declaring that Emelia Earhart had successfully become the first woman to fly cross the Pacific . Besides my love for vintage fashion I also do family history research. On my mother's side we have our family tree traced back to a Piere Joseph Houbian born prior to 1799 in Dinant Belgium. Perhaps these two penchants go hand in hand. The excitement I experience learning about the history of a dress is equal to that felt when learning the identity and history of a new ancestor. The point is this: fashion, clothing, style are artifacts that serve as a sensual reference to the best and worst of times. allows us an opportunity to "try it on" and provides us with a sense of our place in time.
