British Wrestling - Sport or Entertainment?

In the 1970s wrestling was extemely popular in Britiain. Very different in style to the American All-in wrestling, British wrestling was "freestyle" and followed a strict set of rules,

My mother would take me to Fairfield Halls, Croydon every fortnight to watch live wrestling. I would also watch it on "World of Sport" every Saturday afternoon. British wrestlers were my heroes. The sport was full of colourful characters who entertained a mixed audience which spanned the generations. Old ladies and young boys alike enjoyed the thrills and excitement of British Freestyle Professional Wrestling.

We had slick highly skilled lightweights, such as Steve Grey and Zoltan Boscik, the brutal super-heavyweights, such as Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy, and many in between.

Real or Just a Pantomime?

Is It All Fake? Here Is My View.

I guess only the wrestlers themselves really know for certain, and if it is fake they're hardly going to tell us are they?

Wrestling in the 1960s and 1970s was very popular in Britain. Some wrestling fans enjoyed watching clever wrestling and others (perhaps the majority) liked to see a good scrap. The promoters needed to provide what audiences wanted to see. Much of the sport became a villains verses the good guys show. It was full of colourful characters that the crowd loved to hate. Many of the so called wrestlers would just beat the living daylights out of each other rather than wrestle with any real skill. The crowd loved it and the wrestlers and the promoters made their money. Blood was sometimes spilled, limbs were occasionally dislocated. Wrestlers did get hurt.

The two most extreme views are;
1. Everything was choreographed and is is total fake.
2. Everything was completely genuine.

The second view is not very often spoken and I certainly don't agree with it either. However I have heard the first view many times and I disagree with that view too.

I'm sure many of the fight results were decided before the wrestlers entered the ring, but I can't believe that every move was written in advance. I also believe that there were a lot of genuine wrestling bouts, especially among the lightweights.

Giant Haystacks vs Tony Francis

Giant Haystacks flattens this man in 28 seconds. Is this wrestling? I don't think so! Is it acting? Well, Francis was extremely silly to attack Haystacks in that way. So perhaps the fight was fixed. Also Haystacks, who out of the ring was a gentle and deeply religious man, showed no concern that his opponent might be seriously injured. However saying that, it does look very brutal, so I'm not totally convinced either way.

Zoltan Boscik vs John Naylor

Here is a bout of fine wrestling. I don't see any reason to presume that this is fixed in any way. Please feel free to disagree below :-)
