The Best Of British
British pop culture has an important place in the world. We Brits export our music, TV, films, and celebrities all over the world, and we've been responsible for some of the most important pop culture elements to take the world by storm.
From the Beatles onwards began the British music scene, and we've been at the forefront of new musical waves ever since. Punk was born here, as was Britpop and the Manchester sound of bands such as Oasis, and the Happy Mondays. David Bowie has inspired generations of musicians and listeners alike with his music always at the cutting edge. And in return for all of this, America gave us Madonna... fair swap?
Our TV programmes travel exceptionally well, with The Office being made in to a global phenomenon by Ricky Gervais. Who wants to be a millionaire began life here, as did the weakest link, complete with gobby Anne Robinson. The Pop Idol phenomenon began here, under the command of Sir Smug Simon Cowell, and has now gone global. The quirky British sense of humour travels very well too, with Benny Hill, Are you being served, and Absoultely Fabulous all doing extremely well abroad.
Although not as big as the blockbusters which come out of Hollywood, the British film scene is as alive as ever, with hits such as 4 weddings and a funeral, Notting Hill, and Hot fuzz. British actors are in demand, with Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Dominic Monaghan, Sean Connery and Hugh Grant all immediately springing to mind.
When it comes to books and literature, Britain is responsible for Harry Potter, the biggest book sensation ever, and one which appeals to all ages. Then there's the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, which has become a cult series of books around the world.
