Broadway Love Songs for Your Wedding

If you love theatre, and you're planning a wedding, consider adding a splash of the stage to your special day. This article is personal for me, as my husband and I did have songs from musicals in our wedding. We met at a theatre, volunteered throughout the time we were together and he proposed from stage during a curtain call. We both love the theatre, and had a lot of fun adding songs from musicals into our wedding day.

In this lens, I'll share some suggestions for great broadway love songs to add to your wedding planning checklist.

Seating the Mothers and Grandmothers

Recommended: Sunrise, Sunset

Bridal Shower Favor-Mother of the Bride buttonHere's the song we used for the seating of the mothers and grandmothers, "Sunrise, Sunset" from Fiddler on the Roof. The first part of the song goes: "Is this the little girl I carried? Is this the little boy at play? I don't remember growing older, When did they? When did she get to be a beauty? When did he grow to be so tall? Wasn't it yesterday, When they were small? Sunrise, sunset. Sunrise, sunset. Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers, Blossoming even as we gaze. We used a piano version of the song for this part of the wedding ceremony.

Broadway Processional Music

Recommended: Processional from Sound of Music

PixDezines Customize it, Here's Comes the Bride binderFor our wedding, we chose to use a more traditional sounding processional, so we used the processional song from the Sound of Music wedding scene. This is a really pretty song and still from a theatrical production, but it has a more formal sound to it than using a Cole Porter showtune or something like that. The bride entering the room should be a beautiful moment, and we chose not to be too light-hearted about it.

Candle Lighting Ceremony Showtunes Music

Recommended: One Hand, One Heart from West Side Story

Dark Background Wedding Candles stampThe absolute best song for the candle lighting ceremony is "One Hand, One Heart" from West Side Story. Based on the most beautiful love story ever told, Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story tells the story of a forbidden love. One Hand, One Heart is about a marriage ceremony, and the combining of two lives into one. What better song could there be for the ceremony that visually represents that union?

Recessional Broadway Music

Recommended: I Don't Need Anything But You from Annie

Lavender Wedding stampI'll admit, this song is a little out of the ordinary for a wedding. For me personally, I felt it fit our wedding ceremony because we're fun and spunky people (or at least I like to think so). My husband and I met at the theatre, and we're youthful and fun--so this fit for us. This song is more upbeat. In the musical Annie, Annie and Daddy Warbucks sing this duet about how they could lose everything they have and it wouldn't matter as long as they have each other. If you wanted something more traditional, you could pick a song like "Always". If you wanted something more modern, you could do "Grow Old With You" from the Wedding Singer.

I love it! I have a similar lens about my medieval themed wedding. So we did more movies (stuff from the Lord of the Rings, "Storybook Love" from The Princess Bride, etc.) than musicals, though I did sneak in some from Camelot during the reception. I need the "May spontaneously burst into song" shirt! I get accused of doing that a lot. I love the lens!

Weddings songs are really important during the wedding. It sets the mood of the event so choosing songs depends on the what the couple likes, if those were broadway songs then so be it..

Wicked has some great ones. And I think Rent's Seasons of Love would make a cool one for a slideshow.
