The Poetry of Mixed Media Collage

During the summer of 2001 I created a series of mixed media collages that I still think of as visual poems. Unfortunately all of the original works got damaged beyond repair over the years, but I still have excellent scans of the originals.

I hope you enjoy these visual poems as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Bad Hair Day!

This is one of my favorite pieces.

It's just fun and funny and something we can
all relate to. I've always thought this collage
would be perfect in a hair salon.

Be Different!

By: Bambi Watson

This is one of my all time faves!

I just love all the little eccentricities that make
people unique.

Even more so I love anything wild and crazy that
helps individuals stand out from the crowd.

Junkies!

The overdose death of one of my best friends inspired this collage.

Missy was just 23 years old and we had tried over and over again to help her and get her help. The night she overdosed and died, she had been clean and sober for 8 month then got into a fight with her boyfriend and went out and got high.

I really miss her.

Body Image

By: Bambi Watson

This collage explores the pressures our
society puts on girls and womenn to be thin.

What does it say about our society that we
value slimness and beauty in women above
intelligence and skill?

Do we really want to live in a world where how
someone looks is more important than who
that person really is?

By: Bambi Watson

This piece captures how invisible
we all feel from time to time, but especially
during our teen years.

I think this collage just totally speaks for itself.

Dreams

By: Bambi Watson

This piece is very dramatic and explores
how we make our way through lifes ups
and down.

I find this collage really inspirational, because life
is all about working our way out of all the
difficult situations that fate seems to throw at us.

I Don't Fit In!

By: Bambi Watson

Finding your place in the world can be
scary and daunting.

there is just too much peer pressure and
media pressure trying to make everyone
feel like they have to fit in to belong.

This piece is actually encouraging people to
be different, to be unique and be themselves
and resist the urge to conform to how society
think we should be.

Dangerously Entertaining

By: Bambi Watson

This collage explores our society's obsession
with violence.

Violence is entertainment in our society,
from news casts to movies to television.
We feed off violence and innundate our children
with graphic scenes of violence almost from
the day they are born.

They see violence at home, at school on TV,
between the news, professional sports, video
games and movies, our children are over-
exposed to violence their entire lives.

Then when they mow down their classmates
with automatic weapons, we act all shocked
and stupid and blame all the violent movies,
games and television that we as parents
exposed them to, rather than taking resposibility
for not teaching them the difference between
right and wrong.

Challenge Yourself!

By: Bambi Watson

This peice celebrates human spirit.

Part of what is great about being human
is the ability to challenge ourselves to
achieve whatever dreams we have.

Challenge yourself today and every
day to learn something new, to try something
new and to just be the best you can be.

Alcohol!

By: Bambi Watson

This piece explores the negative effects
of Alcohol.

In this society where we allow our government
to take away our civil rights with crazy safety
laws, smoking laws and the patriot act, I notice
that the most dangerous drug there is on earth
is still legal and socially acceptable.

My husbands favorite line whenever we watch
the news, which is rarely, and see story after
story of alcohol related tragedy, like 5 teens
killed on way to prom, alcohol suspected, or
drunk husband stabs his wife 36 times, or
little billy mowed down at bus stop by drunk driver.

Every time one of those stories come on, which
lets be honest at least 50% of all crime is alcohol
related, my hubby always says "well, at least they
weren't smoking cigarettes"
