"You must have Indian in yo family"
"Ooh gurl, you got that good hair, you must have Indian in yo family." Realistically, you're probably not going to hear this phrase very much. Twenty years ago however, not only did you hear this remark, often in the schoolyards, but there was and still is a certain "Willie Lynch" type of mentality associated with it. For those of you who are not familiar with the "Slaveholders Manifesto" and Willie Lynch, here's a brief analysis.
Willie Lynch was a British slave owner in the West Indies, who came to America in the early 1700's. He used mind control techniques on his black slaves and then advocated the use of those same manipulative techniques to American Southern slave owners. Without going into too much detail here's what Willie Lynch (whose name the term "lynching" is derived) taught the American slave owners. Lynch was invited to the colony of Virginia in 1712 to teach his methods, and these were his words (condensed version):
As our boat sailed south of the James River, named for our illustrious King, whose version of the Bible we cherish (see the article, "Duped"), I saw enough to know that your problem is not unique. While Rome used cords of wood as crosses for standing human bodies along its old highways in great numbers, you are here using the tree and the rope on occasion. I caught the whiff of a dead slave hanging from a tree a couple miles back. You are not only losing valuable stock by hangings, you are having uprisings, slaves are running away, your crops are sometimes left in the field too long for maximum profit.
I am here to introduce you to a method of solving your problems. In my bag I have a fool proof method for controlling Black Slaves. I guarantee everyone of you that if installed correctly, it will control the slaves for at least 300 years. My method is simple and members of your family and any Overseer can use it.
I have outlined a number of differences among the slaves and I take these differences and make them bigger. I use fear, distrust, and envy for control purposes. Take this simple list of differences such as age, shade of skin, intelligence, physical size, sex, size of plantation, status of plantation, attitude of owner, whether the slaves live in the valley or on a hill, tall or short, East, West, North, or South, have FINE or COARSE HAIR.
Now that you have a list of difference, I shall give you an outline of action but before that, I shall assure you that distrust is stronger than trust and envy is stronger than adulation, respect, or admiration.
The Black Slave, after receiving this indoctrination, shall carry on and will become SELF-REFUELING and SELF-GENERATING for hundreds of years, maybe thousands.
Don't forget you must pitch the old black versus the young black, the young black male against the old black male; dark skin slaves versus the light skin slaves. Have your white servants and overseers distrust all blacks, but it is necessary that your slaves trust and depend on us. They must love, respect, and trust only us.
Gentlemen, these Kits are keys to control, use them. Have your wives and children use them, never miss an opportunity. My plan is guaranteed and the good thing about this plan is that if used intensely for ONE YEAR the slaves themselves will remain perpetually distrustful.

Now you tell me, do we not see those same issues in the Black community today? One such conundrum is, "Good Hair versus Bad Hair."

Excerpts from "Success Runs In Our Race" ..
Tragically, the infamous Brezinski memorandum and Lynch's predatory, racist instincts were effective and few of us can deny that the self-defeating mentality that he nurtured among slaves lives on today. Still, too many blacks prey upon each other, and those who [attempt] to hold us back watch in delight as the media feeds them with images of conflict within our own families and neighborhoods.
Jealousies within our racial community stifle productive behavior that might benefit us all, and they severely limit our ability to come together for united, positive action in which combined strength and shared resources might elevate our lives.
For generations, instead of seeking black independence, we have sought white acceptance. This self-hatred is obvious even among our own people. Often, light-skinned African Americans are considered more attractive than those with the blackest skin colors. We have shunned each other as reminders of our alleged inferiority. And in doing that, we guaranteed our continued enslavement.

Bronner Brothers Hair Show
August 20th - 23rd, 2011, in Atlanta, GA
The Bronner Brothers Hair Show features a plethora of styles, colors and textures of African American hair. The show is held annually in Atlanta and this years show will be held at the Georgia World Congress Center. It's one of the largest international hair trade shows in the North America. The event attracts thousands of hair professionals from around the world. Hair stylist and people in the industry attend this mega event to learn more about the latest trends in black hair care, styling and fashion.
Me and a buddy attended the event a few years ago and were taken aback at all the beautiful women in attendance; from across the globe. Neither of us are hair-stylist so needless to say, could not provide an objective analysis of the show; too busy looking at .. well, you know.
This year, the plan is to attend and view the 4-day event from a different perspective. The reason I decided to put this Lens together was because of the interest generated after watching Chris Rock's documentary, "Good Hair." Rock puts somewhat of a comical spin on the big business of "Hair." Although Chris Rock is a comedian who makes a living poking fun at people, events, and such, "Good Hair" is a legitimate documentary that, amongst other things, exposes the danger of the main ingredient in creme relaxer - Sodium Hydroxide.
Here's a partial safety warning regarding Sodium Hydroxide:
"Solid sodium hydroxide or solutions of sodium hydroxide may cause chemical burns, permanent injury or scarring if it contacts unprotected human, or other animal, tissue. It may cause blindness if it contacts with the eye. Protective equipment such as rubber gloves, safety clothing and eye protection should always be used when handling the material or its solutions.
My daughter is 15 years of age and since she was about 10 years old she always harassed me about taking her to the salon to get a perm. I caved a couple of times because her friends were getting relaxers and I didn't want her to feel left out. I would try to reason with her on the dangers of constantly getting perms but my warning would basically go in one ear and out the other. Shortly after the movie/documentary "Good Hair" made it to cable, I asked her to watch it. After she watched the documentary she no longer wanted to get a perm. She's a very smart young lady and was able to see for herself, how risky it is to use sodium hydroxide on the scalp.
Remember the scene from Malcolm X, when "Shorty" was giving "Red" a perm and the water would not come on. Red (Malcolm X) tried to put his head in the toilet because his scalp was burning. The white solution on his head was sodium hydroxide (checkout the "perm scene" below). Whether or not the scene was true is not the point because we all know women, and men, who have experienced that burning sensation. Studies show that administering a perm to a child under the age of 10 years, you're possibly damaging the hair follicles for life.
So the attempt at this years Bronner Brothers show is to get to the crux of the issue of "Good versus Bad Hair." Poet Maya Angelou says "the hair is a woman's glory." Interior Designer Shelia Bridges states, "Hair is so important to a woman because her self-esteem is tied into it." If Ms. Angelou and Ms. Bridges are correct then the goal is to see what hair texture does to the female psyche? What role does hair play in her opinion of herself and her opinion of others? It would not be wise to attempt to interview anyone from such a philosophically controversial stance because one, I probably would not get very many women to converse with me, and two, that would be tantamount to going to a Christian revival talking about Allah. Subtlety, will have to be the order of the day.

Weaves and Extensions
If the hair looks real, if it looks like your hair, if it looks like real hair, I can roll with it. But for those women who have weaved hair or extensions that look fake, you should reconsider going back to the natural look. I don't care what the reason is; I've heard, "too much work," "the weave is easy to take care of," "don't have time," whatever the case is, I'm not a fan and I am certain that I speak for many other guys.
My mom was a proud black woman, who, everyday of her adult life would sit at her desk and roll her hair at night. The next morning she would always take her rollers out and comb her hair. This included Saturdays as well. She didn't even walk around the house with rollers on. NEVER. She also wore very little makeup.
I'm just going to come out and say it, some women today come out of the house looking like straight up clowns. Way too much makeup, long false eyelashes that look like you have spiders on the eyelids, an array of colors all over your face, makes these particular women look like Bozo the Clown with boobs, minus the big nose. And if you're offended by this you're probably wearing too much damn makeup .. and that is applicable to women of all colors.
Men do not like all that makeup, it gets all over our clothes and its simply not appealing to most guys. Some women wear that really thick, dark lipstick, that, if they are not careful it gets on their teeth. And what's up with Tina Thompson of the Los Angeles Sparks, WNBA. Can someone please ask her to take off that black lipstick? It's either black, or a deep, rich, burgundy or maroon color. Whatever it is, it's not attractive at all. I do realize she is a basketball player (and a good one at that) and not trying to look good on the court, so why wear it at all. A lot of female players wear very little makeup, a little lip gloss maybe, and that's fine, but somebody please talk to Tina. The female soccer players don't seem to have a problem nor do the college hoop players.
