Brother Louie: Hot Chocolate vs Stories

Brother Louie: A Tale of Forbidden Love?
The cover version by the American band, Stories, is distinctly different to that of the one by British band, Hot Chocolate.
I hadn't heard the cover until I came to the States. It was only during several months of late night driving that it first came to my attention. Travelling home, I used to flip on the local Oldies station for company, and more often than not, Brother Louie was one of the songs that was played.
I remember thinking at the time: What the heck have they done to this song? Having grown up in England during the 1970s, and used to the original version by Hot Chocolate, the whole feel of the song had been changed. This wasn't the track I knew and loved!

About the Band: Hot Chocolate
Although the group still exists today in another form, Hot Chocolate enjoyed its greatest successes during the 1970s and 1980s.At a time when both Motown and Philadelphia International were producing their own brands of American funk and soul, in the UK, Hot Chocolate was beginning its prolific run of pop funk chart hits. Over the decade the band managed to become one of only three acts to achieve at least one hit song in the UK in every year of the 1970s. In all, Hot Chocolate charted 20 singles between 1970 and 1979.
Fronted by Errol Brown, Hot Chocolate are probably best remembered for the songs You Sexy Thing - used in the movie The Full Monty - as well as Every 1's A Winner, both also American hits.
Other big sellers included So You Win Again, the group's only UK Number 1, as well as Emma, A Child's Prayer and the one discussed here, Brother Louie.

Hot Chocolate's rendition has a pop/soul/funk feel to it and includes several passages of spoken words which are missing from the American re-recording.

About the Band: Stories
The story of Stories is a fairly short one. Formed in 1972 by Michael Brown and vocalist Ian Lloyd, the band only lasted two years in total.Over that period, Stories briefly brushed the US charts with songs like I'm Coming Home and Mammy Blue, but it was the cover of Brother Louie that became the band's biggest claim to fame when it reached Number 1 in the US for two weeks during the late Summer of 1973.
However, the group could not repeat the success of this song, and only one of their albums, About Us, managed to place inside the US Top Forty. Not long after this, Stories was history.
Brother Louie: The Stories Version
The Cover From August 1973
Stories one big American hit is the revised version of Brother Louie, which became a US Number One song at the end of August, 1973.
Notice that the arrangement is completely different - more of a rock feel - and that the spoken word element has been removed. This is probably due to the sensitivity of American radio stations, which no doubt, would not have played the disc had they remained.

- Woops... I like how both version sound but as someone who likes anything original, I would have like that the Stories sing the exact same song as the Hot Chocolate, which I really loved when I was... oh... sooooooooooooo young - but never forgot! What a fantastic band!
