Folk Music by The Brothers Four
Our dad was transferred in 1963 and we moved from Pendleton SC to Scottsboro Ala. The first few weeks, we didn't know many other kids so we entertained ourselves listening to some of our favorite music and singing along. The Big Folk Hits The Brothers Four Album was one that was played over and over again.
When I started writing this, I remembered that I still had this old album so climbed up on a step stool to see if I could find it on the top shelf of a bookcase cabinet that contains boxes of old toys and books. Sure enough, it was there and fortunately I immediately spied it in the stack of old records. It felt good to hold this old album filled with fond memories of family.

The Big Folk Hits The Brothers Four and Song Book
The Brothers Four formed their group in 1957 and were best known for their 1960 hit Greenfields.
This wonderful album had the following songs by The Brothers Four and we knew the words to all of them.
Silver Threads and Golden Needles
500 Miles
Walk Right In
El Paso
The John B. Sails
If I Had A Hammer
Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport
Darling Corey
Scarlet Ribbons
Wolverton Mountain
Jamaica Farewell
Michael Row The Boat Ashore
I can still hear our mom and dad singing Wolverton Mountain.
When I pulled the old 33 1/3 record out of the cover, I discovered that another record was in there. It is the album Song Book and contains the following songs by The Brothers Four:
Side 1
Goodnight Irene
The Tavern Song
Lady Greensleeves
The Drillers' Song
Nobody Knows
Side 2
Ole Smokey
Tarrytown
Come For To Carry Me Home
Summer Days Alone
Frogg No.2
I remember these songs also and actually think that this was the first Brothers Four album that we owned. Hmmmmm...I wonder where the cover is for this record and I wonder where the record is for the cover of The Big Folk Hits.

- As I write this comment, I'm listening to Try to Remember... oh... I cannot possibly describe how full my heart feels right now... I loved this song all my life, and my earliest memories of this particular song are from Kindergarten for some reason.
I couldn't possibly have one favorite Brothers Four song... I used to giggle like crazy when they sang Frogg 1 ("he sauntered up to Molly Mouse's side uh huh...'the direct approach'...") I would laugh and laugh!
I sing "Greenfields" a lot - I can't play it on guitar, but I can belt it out!
I also loved their version of Nancy Whiskey. I had the pleasure of meeting the Brothers Four in the early 1990s when they came to the north country of New Hampshire. True gentlemen!
Thank you for adding to my joy of music memories this morning! :)

- You know I love folk music, OhMe, and The Brothers Four were one of my favorites. I've now done my own story on my very favorite folk group, The Kingston Trio, and have lensrolled your Brothers Four to it.

- I hadn't thought of these guys in a long time. They really song their hearts out. This has brought back some fond memories for me Nancy.
Thanks for add a link to U2,
Susie
