Bruce Goff's work is delightfully different
Bruce Goff designed some gorgeous modern homes, with sleek lines. He also designed some homes that look like something out of a fantasy landscape. He loved to incorporate unconventional building materials, such as chunks of slag glass. Take a peek and see what kind of buildings this lesser known, outside the box thinker and architect came up with.

Bruce Goff's education
Bruce Goff started working for an architectural firm when he was 12 years old. He began experimenting with designing houses soon after. He never received a formal education in architecture, and Frank Lloyd Wright recommended he not do so, believing that his creativity would be squashed there. Wright wrote a letter to Goff which comments, "If you want to lose Bruce Goff, go to school."
Goff was a painter, and also a musician. He received inspiration for his architecture in music, composing a building as if it were music in three dimensions.

Hard to find Goff books
The first book, At Home in the Heartland, is the book that introduced me to Bruce Goff. As part of a midwest architecture tour, it showcases one of his houses in yummy pictures. The others are more scholarly works for in depth study.
Bruce Goff's Frank House
The home of Frankoma Pottery founders John and Grace Lee Frank, designed by architect Bruce Goff, incorporates ideas and designs of the owners as well as Goff's.

This is a very amateur video, you'll want to turn off the sound on this one! No talking just annoying background noise. Fun house, though! You can rent this one as a B&B, see links above.
