Bruges Lace Crochet:Old Tradition, New Experience

Bruges Lace Crochet is a specific decorative lace crochet. It has also been called Brugge crochet and Russian lace crochet. Originating in Belgium (Bruges) it resembles tatted lace made on bobbins. I've been crocheting for many, many years yet was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon a pattern for a scarf made in this style. I found the pattern in a complimentary copy of Interweave Crochet.

Anything created using the Bruges lace crochet technique is done in ribbons. This photo, courtesy of Beadsky shows the ribbon curving. The curves are created with shorter stitches on the inside curve, longer stitches on the outside curve. It's a very beautiful technique that can be used for free-form creations as well.

Bruges Lace Crochet: What sets it apart

Bruges lace crochet starts with a foundation chain. It then loops back around to form a row of stitches (usually double crochet) across this foundation chain. When the row is filled, chain stitches are made to form a 'bridge' up to the next row.

In traditional North American style, this is where a ch-3 would be used in place of the first dc of the next row. Instead, a few chains are used to create a lacy look.

Japanese Crochet Books

Yoko Suzuki's name always comes up as a favorite designer of Bruges-type crochet. Her books are rare, so if you come across one, I recommend you grab it.
