Bruxism Causes...

Some of the causes of bruxism include:

Stress

Stress is the number one cause of many ailments and conditions that we have in this fast paced world. Most medical professionals agree that stress also plays a big part in bruxism. The stress that you encounter during the day will manifest itself at night in your sleep through bruxism.

Medication

Certain medication can also cause bruxism. Especially antidepressants used for depression, personality or anxiety disorders. These medications are called SSRI's, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

Misalignment of the lower jaw

This condition is also referred to as TMJ, or temporomandibular joint. When this particular joint is out of alignment, then bruxism is the body's natural way of correcting the problem. Because when this joint is out of alignment, and the person goes to sleep, their airway is obstructed. This also leads to sleep apnea. Sleep apnea, TMJ and bruxism are all related. This misalignment is one of the leading causes of bruxism in children. When children grind their teeth, this is most likely the cause. And depending on the age of the child, it can be corrected with surgery.

Bruxism Treatments...

As with all treatment options, you should at first consult your physician. That being said, some of the treatments for bruxism include the following:

Relaxation Therapy

Relaxation therapy can be used if your doctor determines that your bruxism is stress related. There are a number of things that you can do to relieve your stress. Things like, regular exercise and cutting back on the coffee and the alcohol.

Mouthguards

Most dentists will prescribe a mouthguard for you if they suspect that you have bruxism. Depending on the severity of your particular bruxism, these mouthguards might work. But the basic premise is temporary. Instead of grinding your teeth, you are now chewing the mouthguards.

Surgery

As I mentioned above, if your bruxism is causing you an extreme health risk, then your doctor will recommend surgery. TMJ, sleep apnea, amd bruxism are all related, and it is very dangerous to have all three at the same time.
