Bruxism Exercises...They Do Work!

Bruxism exercises. If you have found this webpage then you are wondering about two things:

1. Is there such a thing as bruxism exercises?

2. Do they work?

The answer to your questions are : Yes and Yes! Bruxism exercises do exist and they do work!

Bruxism exercises are exercises that the average person can do to relieve and often times cure, (yes I said cure!) their bruxism. These exercises will save you money and aggravation, (Maybe even your marriage!). First of all, they will save you money because you will not have to spend unnecessary money on mouthguards, prescription drugs and the like.

They will save you aggravation because the average bruxism sufferer has no idea that he/she has this condition. The only information that they have on this condition is from their significant other. The bruxer's wife or husband is the one that bears the brunt of the condition. Having to endure countless sleepless nights trying to zone out that eerie teeth grinding noise is enough to drive anyone crazy!

Causes Of Bruxism

According to the medical community, bruxism is caused by a variety of things. The three biggest causes are stress, prescription drugs and misalignment of the lower jaw.

Stress

Stress is said to be the number one cause of bruxism. And its no wonder, with the fast paced, get it done yesterday world that we live in, this stress manifests itself in the form of teeth grinding.

Prescription drugs

Certain prescription drugs also bring on bruxism. These drugs are called SSRI's, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These drugs are used in the treatment of personality disorders, anxiety disorders and depression.

Misalignment of the lower jaw

This misalignment is sometimes a birth defect and can be the number one reason for bruxism in young children. In such a case, surgery should be used to correct the condition. Left untreated this misalignment can turn into the more serious problem of TMJ, or temporomandibular joint.

This particular joint is responsible for the movement of the lower jaw. If the misalignment is not corrected at an early age it can result in headaches, facial pain and numerous problems throughout the childs life.

Symptoms Of Bruxism

Some of the symptoms of bruxism include but not are limited to:

1. Chronic facial pain

2. Damaged teeth

3. Morning headaches

These are just some of the symptoms of bruxism. But I would be remiss in my duties of giving you the best information on the subject if I don't mention sleep apnea. Sleep apnea, TMJ and bruxism are all related.

Sleep apnea is when the person stops breathing while asleep. (This condition contributed to NFL great Reggie White's death.) Some medical professions state that the misalignment of the jaw(TMJ), contributes to sleep apnea, which contributes to bruxism.

The bruxism can be caused by the TMJ, which will cause the sleep apnea. Some of the medical community also say that bruxism is the bodys way of keeping the airway open while you sleep. So, if you have sleep apnea, then you now know why you might be grinding your teeth in your sleep as well.
