2012 marks the 145th year that Bucilla has been providing quality products for crafters.The company name of Bucilla is an acronym of it's original name Bernard Ulmann Company Incorporated, Lace, Linen, and Accessories.
Bucilla Company History
Founded in 1867, Mr. Bernard Ulmann sold his products from a push cart on the streets of New York, offering napkins, doilies, hankerchiefs, and embroidery designs.
1870 marked the opening of his only retail store, and in 1875 he started selling his products to other craft retailers.
The early 1900's brought his development of a high quality yarn that was designed especially for hand knitting called Mellina; and publications of needlework books and patterns. The Mellina brand was sold to private investors in the late 1960's, and no longer exists.
The company was owned and managed by the Bernard Ulmann family until 1922, when it became an employee-owned company. In 1962 the Indian Head Corporation bought it and sold it to Hannson Trust in 1966, who sold it to Armour-Dial (Greyhound Corporation) in 1977.
Private investors bought Bucilla 1983, and in 1996 the Dyson-Kissner-Moran Corporation bought it and placed the company under the direction of Plaid Enterprises, where it remains today.
