Buck Owens
Alvis, when he was around four years old, came into the house and told his family that his name was Buck, just like the family mule. Buck the mule impressed Alvis and gave him a nickname that would go with him for the rest of his life.
In his late teens and early twenties Buck was working as a truck driver. On one of his trips through California he happened upon Bakersfield. When he saw Bakersfield he made up his mind where he wanted to live. In 1950 Buck and his wife moved to Bakersfield and made it their home.
Buck recorded his first hit song, Second Fiddle, which made it all the way to spot 24 on the country music charts. Buck continued to hit the charts until 1963 when he made it to #1 with Act Naturally. From then until his last #1, The Streets of Bakersfield in 1988 Buck achieved 21 #1 hits.

The Buckaroos
Buck Owens and his best friend Don Rich put together The Buckaroos in the early 1960s. The lineup for The Buckaroos saw some changes but in the early days they included Don Rich, Wayne Stone, Merle Haggard, Doyle Presley, Tom Brumley, Jay MacDonald, JD Maness and Willie Cantu. Haggard was the one who came up with the name Buckaroos for Buck's band.Buck Owens and The Buckaroos were known for their red, white and blue guitars and fiddles. They wanted to project a feeling of American Music and I think they did very well.
Buck Owens and The Buckaroos actually had a television series of their own. The Buck Owens' Ranch aired from 1966 until 1972. Below is a video of the band performing I've Got A Tiger By The Tail on The Buck Owens' Ranch television show in 1966.

Buck Owens On Hee Haw
Buck Owens was a co-host, along with Roy Clark, of the Hee Haw show for more than 16 years. He was on the first episode in 1969 and didn't leave the show until 1986. It would be difficult to imagine the Hee Haw show without Buck's songs and comedy sketches. In case you missed it Hee Haw was a country music variety show that featured country guest stars like Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, George Jones and Merle Haggard and rural comedy sketches and jokes. Of course Buck Owens and Roy Clark performed songs and everyone participated in the comedy skits.
The cast of Hee Haw included people like Grandpa Jones, Junior Samples, Minnie Pearl, Kenny Price, and Lulu Roman.

The World Loses Buck Owens
While Buck was getting ready to leave some of his fans came up to talk to him. When Buck learned that they had driven all the way from Oregon just to see him perform he decided to go on after all.
That same night Buck Owens died in his sleep, just a few hours away from the stage and his cheering fans , and the world lost a country music legend.
