Whitetail Bucks

It's hunting season and the monster buck's are on the move! The whitetail deer is a magnificent creature, the most graceful (in my opinion) of all wildlife and a great subject for wildlife watching. A whitetail buck also has a unique ability. They have the power to cause a hunter to contract a disease known as "BUCK FEVER" How is this contracted? All you have to do is get a huge buck lined up in the sights of your weapon. (Or camera in my case).Enjoy the hunt!!

How Dreams Are Made

Whitetail deer can run 30-40 miles per hour. Antler growth for the bucks start in the spring. The tissue, known as velvet, provides blood supply. When the velvet begins to die the bucks eat the shedding and begin to make "rubs" to polish their new antler growth. During breeding season, starting October to November here in the south, they begin to spar for dominance. The biggest rack usually wins! The buck gets the doe, but the trophy rack is the prize for the hunter. Check out our trophy bucks, and please make good use of the game you kill!!

Redneck Rest Stop

While your hunting in the woods, sometimes situations arise that weren't part of the plan. A little thought beforehand can sometimes get you out of a bad situation. A convenient portable potty in a strategic spot can be a life saver. Southern humor, old fashion outhouse with autumn leaves. It's the Redneck Rest Stop!! Perfect spot to stop and take a break. Those leaves just might come in handy too!!

Cataloochee Elk

While visiting the Smoky Mountains to view the whitetails and capture some great photos, take a trip over to Cataloochee, North Carolina and view the Elk while they are in rut. Since the park re-introduced elk a decade ago, they have thrived and increased. There's nothing like the sound of a magnificent elk bugling on a foggy cool autumn morning in the mountains.

Tennessee Backroads Photography now offers wrapped canvas prints! Just added this one of a magnificent Cataloochee elk.

A Doe, A Deer...

After breeding season, the bucks shed their racks. The rut is over for another season, but a new generation is in the making. Female does have a gestation period of @ 200 days. Fawns are normally born in May and June depending on your location. Whitetail fawns are usually twins, sometimes triplets. They are awesome to watch.

The Trophy

There is no better place to spot whitetail trophy bucks than in Cade's Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains. If you've never been to Cade's Cove, you're missing a great experience. You will see lots of trophies there, but the only weapon you can use to "shoot" is a camera. "NO HUNTING!" Dream on, and enjoy your "hunting" in the Smokies!
