My Buddha Painting Series

Multi-Dimensional Paintings

I've created a series of photo/mixed-media Buddha paintings. Each piece has been designed as a shrine-like environment for the image of the Buddha within. One of my Buddha photographs becomes the central focus and is recessed within the canvas, on an inner layer.

The Buddha image acts as a visual reminder of our ability to cultivate peace within ourselves and can serve as a guide on our path towards wholeness.

"Royal Buddha"

Photo/Mixed Media Painting - The Layers

"Royal Buddha" has been created with three layers; the outer canvas layer, the painted board that acts as an inner frame, and the photograph itself. These layers allow the inner photo to be recessed within the painting and draw the viewer into the artwork. I so enjoy working with layers and love the multi-dimensional look that the layers create.

All the paintings in the Buddha series have been designed with the same three layers.

Buddha Prayer Art

A sacred space for your prayers, wishes, hopes and dreams.

Let me introduce you to my series of Prayer Box Paintings.

I spent years thinking about the concept, wanting to create a piece of artwork that could act as a place holder for someone's prayers. I finally came up with a construction for a painted box that could be attached to the 8" X 10" canvas. Although they were originally designed for prayers, the box can provide storage for personal affirmations, goals, or statements of gratitude. I have also used one of the Prayer Boxes as a business card holder during art shows.

Visit my Prayer Box gallery to see the variety of images that have made their way into these canvases (not just Buddhas).

Indonesian Sculpture Influenced My Paintings

A Visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art - Indonesian Sculpture Exhibit

Years ago, while I still lived in New York, I made one of my many trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The museum was crowded with people visiting a very popular exhibit (possibly Monet). I was there to see another special exhibit as well, the Indonesian Sculpture, which I went to first, before braving the crowd. It was hard to leave the sculptures that filled the room with beauty, grace and peace. I fell in love with the wonderful flow of the designs and the elegance of the symbolism.

I spent hours alone at that exhibit, taking notes on the symbols and their meaning, drawing segments of the stylized designs, and soaking up whatever I could. After that day, images of the Buddha and the lotus found their way into my artwork. I began incorporating sculptural elements in my paintings.

Here are some of my notes from that day:

The Lotus: symbol of life.
The Wheel: when decorated with stylized flames it is the symbol of the sun.
Enveloping flames: the fire of wisdom burning away ignorance.

I would say that the experience of visiting the Indonesian Sculpture exhibit that day, has stayed with me ever since. It has influenced two of my painting series, played a part in my husband and I going on our honeymoon to Bali, and has lead to the presence of many Indonesian decorative elements in our home. (The photo above is of one of the Buddha pieces we brought back from Bali.)

Art in the Present

The Buddha said..."Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment."

One of the wonderful things about art and photography is the way it brings the artist into the present moment. We live so much of our lives in the past and in the future, with little time spent in the present. The process of creating art is a path to the present, to experiencing the NOW.

Buddha Art on Wikipedia

Buddhist art originated on the Indian subcontinent following the historical life of Siddhartha Gautama, 6th to 5th century BC, and thereafter evolved by contact with other cultures as it spread throughout Asia and the world.

Early Buddhist art followed one Indian aniconic tradition, which avoids direct representation of the human figure. Around the 1st century AD an iconic period emerged lasting to this day which represents the Buddha in human form.

Buddhist art followed believers as the dharma spread, adapted, and evolved in each new host country. It developed to the north through Central Asia...

Mandalas

An Ancient Art Form

A Mandala is an ancient art form, used in Hinduism and Buddhism as a meditative aid. The word mandala is Sanskrit for circle. It is a geometric design, incorporated within a circle and represents the universe, wholeness and unity.

The mandala-like form has been used in cultures throughout the world, including celtic symbols, Navajo sand paintings, Native American medicine wheels, labyrinths and more.

Buddha on Maui

Look What I Found At the Beach

During a family trip to Maui, I took this photo of a Buddha statue. We had gone for a walk along the beach, by the hotels in Kaanapali. And there it was, right near the edge of the sand.
