Traveling to Dzogchen Beara

Buddhist Retreat Centre

Ah, what a busy autumn its been! My camera is laden with pictures and I have so many sites to share with you. I'll try to get to my Squidoo pages more often, but it is hard to stay indoors when we are graced with nice weather. Our summer was a wash out needless to say, so we take the sunny days with gratitude whenever we can get them.

A few days ago we decided to venture over to Dzogchen Beara, a short drive from the town of Castletownbere. Dzogchen Beara is a Tibetan Buddhist Retreat Centre welcoming people of any nationality and religion. It runs under the spiritual direction of Sogyal Rinpoche, author of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. They are in the process of creating a Spiritual Care Centre for those in need. The surroundings are magnificent, serene, and well worth the visit.

Natural Beauty

Meditation Garden

We had to stop and catch our breath in the meditation garden. The view was absolutely breathtaking. No wonder they call it the silent garden. There are no words to describe such powerful, natural beauty. :)

Buddha Amoghasiddhi

Butter Candles

At the end of our stay we stepped into a little hidden sanctuary containing the figure of the Buddha Amoghasiddhi. The cabinet was filled with butter candles and we each lit one with prayers for our friends and families. A small sign nearby explained the significance of the Buddha's posture:

* Right hand: mudra of fearless protection. Protecting all living beings from any mishaps, obstacles or negative influences.
* Left hand: rests in the meditative gesture of natural great peace
