Who is Buddy Roemer?

Roemer is a socially conservative republican who grew up on the northern Scopena plantation, which is now known as Taylortown, Louisiana. Roemer regularly attends a Methodist church and met his wife who plays the piano at the chapel next door. He got his start in politics by winning a seat in the house of representatives as a conservative democrat from 1981-1988. He was known in the House as a major supporter of Ronald Reagan's policies of cutting bureaucracy and spending. Because of this he was at constant odds with the democratic party.

In 1988 Buddy Roemer ran for the governor of Louisiana as a democrat and defeated the incumbent democratic governor Edwin Edwards in the primaries by 5 points. Edwards withdrew from the general election and gave power to Roemer Prior to his official inauguration. In 1991 as his reelection campaign approached, Roemer switched to the republican party after pressure from the George H. Bush White House. He ended up losing to David Duke in the republican primary causing him to lose reelection.

Roemer's Comeback

In 2010 Roemer Announces He Intends to Run For President in 2012

Roemer has recently officially announced his candidacy for the president of the United States in 2012. At a recent speech in Iowa he has highlighted his previous successes. He boasts his experience as a congressman and governor while working closely with Ronald Reagan. In Louisiana his administration balanced the budget, cut the unemployment percentage in half, evaluated the performance of teachers increasing wages to those that were successful, put an end to government waste, and reduced toxic emissions by over 40 percent.

He claims a major issue of his in 2012 will be campaign finance reform. To show his seriousness on this issue Roemer will not accept more than $100 donations from contributors for his campaign and refuses to take PAC money. He says elections should be about ideas and not who can raise the largest amount of cash to take out their opponents. Twenty years ago in Louisiana, Roemer was ousted from his position as governor by two candidates who ultimately served prison time on corruption charges. Both candidates took special interest money which Roemer argues limits the voice of the American people and can lead to electing dishonest politicians.

On March 7th Roemer officially entered the race after forming his exploratory committee. And in his official statement he denounced the system of Washington D.C. and says politicians rely too heavily on special interest money. Politicians aren't doing their job because they are too involved in secret behind the scenes handshakes with corporations, PACs, and lobbyists. Buddy is currently the only candidate who will not be taking money from any group or organization.
