Making a budget before moving into an apartment
If you are in the market for a new apartment then obviously you realize that money is going to be playing a big role in your search. The problem is that it can often be very difficult to actually come up with an acceptable budget in many cases. Hopefully this guide will help you analyze your monthly income and expenses so you can better determine how much you can actually afford.
The Basics
Determining a budget is not that complicated if you understand the basic information that goes into budgeting. The two basic things you need to understand are these: how much money are you brining in and how much money are you sending out.
Probably the most effective way to make a budget it so start with a blank sheet of paper or a spreadsheet; this way you can keep track of everything you're working on. Determine exactly how much money you are making on a monthly basis (after taxes of course) and then subtract all of your expenses.

Determining Expenses
There are two varieties of expenses most people face: required and optional expenses. Required expenses generally involve things such as food, gas, clothing, and anything else that you will always be paying for. Obviously there is always a little bit of confusion when it comes to non-fixed expenses such as monthly food and gas costs but you should do your best to come up with an honest estimate. In the end it is a good idea to always make your monthly expense estimate slightly higher than normal in order to account for fluctuations in spending and cost and to prevent you from going over budget accidentally.
Try to list out as many of your expenses as possible in as much detail as possible. Determine if each of these is option or required and keep them grouped based on that; if it comes down to it shaving some extra money off of your monthly expenses will be much easier when you have a clear list of things that are not required each month.
Finally you can begin to actually determine a potential renting budget. Obviously you must make sure that your budget stays balanced (income greater than expenses). The greater the difference the better because this will help keep you protected in case of fluctuations in your expenses while also allowing you to save some money each month.

Rental Budget
At this point you should have a pretty clear idea of what you are able to afford each month on rent. It is up to you to decide how tight of a budget you would like to have, just remember that a little extra money left over each month never hurt anyone. If you don't leave much extra money in the budget each month then you will also likely have to deal with some money problems at the end of each month so it really is a good idea to try and leave at least a little extra room in your budget.
When adding your rent to the budget you just created make sure to include things such as utilities; if you didn't already include this in your required expenses then it will obviously be added on with your monthly rent expense.
If everything works out then you are all set, unfortunately if you find that your budget is tighter than anticipated it is time to make some changes. At this stage you can either consider a cheaper apartment to save on monthly rent or you can find other ways to cut some unnecessary spending out of your monthly expenses. Continue to work with your expenses and rental cost until you eventually reach a balanced budget which you are comfortable living with.
