Snapshots of a Wedding on a Budget

May 06, 2006: The Wedding Site - Ormond Beach Memorial Gardens

House of Taylor Established

We married at the Ormond Beach Memorial Gardens behind the Art Museum off of Granada. You can rent use of the gardens from the City of Ormond Beach. If I remember correctly, the cost was around $35 for this lovely, secreted haven in the midst of Ormond Beach.

The contact number for the City of Ormond Beach is (386) 676-3250

The Gardens

Now About the Chairs....

Enter Rental Mart

"Renting" the Ormond Beach Memorial Gardens gives you just that: access to the Gardens. It does not include the chairs.

Someone told me about the lovely lady who owns the Rental Mart in Holly Hill, and she was very helpful. We had 70 people at our ceremony. When everyone arrived, the chairs we well in place with no one in sight as if they'd always been there. Very smooth, no fuss.

A few tips about chair rental:
Spend on simplicity. Skip the chair covers, sashes, etc.
Your "real" (literally) accessories are the foliage and flowers. The look of plain white chairs is much cleaner, simpler, and more elegant in that they balance well against the beauty of the gardens without competing with them. On the right here is a photo of the chairs from Rental Mart exactly as they placed them in the Ormond Beach Memorial Gardens.

Music for Special Occasions

Boy, did we get lucky!

We wanted baroque music. And violins. My initial brilliant idea, being a former music major myself, was to call a local University known for its music program and arrange for a student quartet.

After a couple of ignored emails and phone calls, I was less than a month away from the wedding frantically in search of violinists. I mean, when violins are bad, they're bad and there's no hiding it. They had to be very good.

I think I was more concerned about the music than anything else. I'm very sensitive to pitch and tone and I just knew we were going to have a mess going with live violins.

But I was totally wrong, thank goodness! I called Music for Special Occasions who are members of the Halifax String Quartet.

They did a beautiful job, and their price was incredibly reasonable! I rolled off a list of all my favorite baroque songs and Lecy, the woman I spoke with, was very candid about what would work and what wouldn't. So I ended up with my beloved Air by Bach, Pachelbel's Canon in D, Queen of Sheba, and so on and they played us well through the reception to everyone's enjoyment. Those ladies were great!

People Are Still Talking About the Food

We have two people to thank for that...

The lady at Rental Mart for telling us about Moore's Fine Foods and Kevin, the owner of Moore Fine Foods for being such a great chef!

The Grand Marnier Whipped Cream is a MUST TRY!

We talked to about three different caterers, and I was leaning toward something like the local French restaurant when we were referred to Moore Fine Foods. We met with Kevin, the chef/owner, and he was a very friendly, relaxed, but professional Southern guy who knew exactly what to recommend and helped us make palatable and elegant choices while not pressing us on the budget.

One thing we had determined in advance was that we would budget to the bones where we could and splurge on the guests' experience. The food and wine encompassed the largest portion of our budget - around $4,000 total for 70 people including wine and cake, but they were well fed and as I mentioned in the header - they STILL talk about the food.

Wedding Food Half Eaten
The food was wonderful, but there was no time to eat for bride and groom!

Here was our menu:
Fire Grilled Mahi Mahi Dip
Oh, man. This stuff was SO GOOD! It sounded not so exciting to me, but WOW, the taste bowled me over and I think everyone loved it.
Fire Grilled Beef Medallions
The beef was very, very tender and had a GREAT flavor. There were many, many comments on how good the beef was.
Mango Chutney Chicken
I think this was close to what we had. At the time, they were called Chicken Medallions with some-such-sauce, and the chicken was served COLD. I found the idea of cold chicken highly offensive, but my husband loved the idea and I was determined not to be a Bridezilla. Plus, I already trusted Kevin. Darn it if that wasn't great chicken! And I hate fruit with my meat, but I'll be darned if that didn't work too! The chicken was a total winner, and since we had a luncheon wedding, cold chicken was a perfectly elegant choice.
Side Dish: Marsala Mushrooms
You know how Chef Emeril tastes something, pauses, then goes "Oh, man!" Yeah. They're THAT good. Kevin let us sample most of our choices beforehand, and I remember three things: my shock at how good that COLD chicken was, those wonderful Marsala Mushrooms, and - it haunts me to this day - the beautifully balanced decadence of that incredible Grand Marnier Whipped Cream. I could have had that for lunch and been just dandy.
Dessert: Fresh Strawberries with Grand Marnier Whipped Cream
Wow. Nothing more to be said, just WOW.

More Unique Wedding Favor Ideas

Some ideas I jotted down when researching

Ringing bells. Let the clear, crisp sound of silver bells initiate a kiss between the newly married couple. Bells with clips on top also hold place cards (wedding bell place card holder).

Inscribed book of poetry, or literature. Have your favorite poem, or a significant verse printed on fancy paper and bound into a book. Inscribe your names and the wedding date on the cover. This will make a particularly meaningful favor.

Ornaments. A single, classy ornament, especially for weddings near the holiday season will remind your guests of the part they played in your special day.

Single truffle. To ensure that your favors will be taken home and enjoyed, give your guests a single, fancy truffle. Perhaps from a renowned chocolatier in your region, or your personal favorite. Wrap in a clean, white box and tie with ribbons the colors of your wedding (midori organdy ribbon).

Bestselling Books on Making the Most of Your Wedding

Compared to the cost of a wedding, books are very inexpensive, and what you can learn from them can save you thousands! Check out your local used book stores too. I ordered at least 7 books from Amazon on everything from floral design (I still flunked that one!) to soapmaking, to wedding planning. Get great ideas, pick what you like best, and find the best savings for it!
