What is Tango?

Tango is a type of dance that merges African and European styles. The dance is characterized by partners dancing in close embrace. It is a very sensual dance with complicated footwork. Some believe that tango dancing is the physical expression of intimate communication between a man and a woman.

The dance and the music of tango are deeply connected to the Argentinean culture and society, which is where the dance is believed to have originated.

History of Tango

buenos aires tangoTango danced into the world at the turn of the 20th century. Its exact origins are debatable, but most people agree that the dance sprung from the lower-class districts of Buenos Ares, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay, perhaps via sailors from Cuba. The dance became very popular in brothels among European immigrants.

The word itself was actually first used to describe parties and festivities within the black community of Rio de la Plata, the river that runs along the border of Argentina and Uruguay.

By 1911, tango has become popular among the upper classes in Argentina (although still frowned upon), and was introduced to Paris, where it became a hit. By 1913, tango was being danced in New York, St. Petersburg, and other major world cities.

Tango in Buenos Aires

tango in buenos airesOne of the best ways to fully experience the magic of tango is during an Argentina vacation to Buenos Aires. The pedestrian street of Caminito in the colorful La Boca neighborhood is a prime spot to catch locals dancing in the streets.

Watching a proper tango show in a tango house is a great way to combine food and dance. Tango PorteƱo is highly recommended. This way you can combine a great Argentina restaurant experience with a live show.

And, of course, you could always learn the moves yourself! Buenos Aires is full of milongas (tango dance halls) that offer lessons to beginner dancers. Centro Cultural Torcuatro Tasso in the San Telmo district is a great option, as is La Catedral in Almagro.
