The Buffalo Skull is a Prized Possession of Mine

The buffalo skull that I have was found in the Badlands of North Dakota in the United States of America. It was given to me as a gift by a friend named Dave Hendrickson in 2007. Dave found the skull while he was bow hunting for mule deer in the Badlands. He said that only the back side of the skull was visible and the rest of the skull was under ground. It was found near First Creek. This buffalo skull is one of my most prized possessions and it sits on a coffee table in my office. It is a part of the decor and is a reminder to me of how honored I am. I use the "Bison Skull" to display medicine bags and leather pouches that I have made. Also, I use the skull to display jewelry that I have made from polymer clay and precious gem stones and other beads.

Host: Susie Lehto, lensmaster Tipi on Squidoo, a Giant Squid and a Squid Angel. I presently live in Fargo, North Dakota in the USA. I am not a Native American, my forefathers came from Finland, but I am very native.

Welcome! This is my Buffalo Skull!

A larger picture of the introduction. Photos by Susie Lehto

As a hunter and outdoors man, Dave has found many buffalo skulls and given many away to people who were very special to his heart. When he gave me a skull I accepted it with honor and was well pleased that someone thought that highly of me. I asked myself, "Who would give a buffalo skull away?" ... An outdoors man would!

The horse statues are gifts that my three children gave me many years ago. The painting was created by my daughter when she was about six years old, its composition is wonderful! The dark brown stones on the table are flint that were found in the Badlands, and some sandstones that my sister found and gave to me.

The Ceremonial Buffalo Skull

Long ago the population of the bison was depleted by the white man killing them for their hides and the meat was left to rot. The Native American Indians would travel the Great Plains in North America in search of the buffalo for food to eat. The Indians used buffalo hides to make a place to dwell in called the tipi, for clothing, drums, and many other uses. Nothing went to waste...not even the buffalo bones.

The people of the tribes became hungry in search of the buffalo. The great chief of the tribes would use a buffalo skull in a ceremonial prayer to TaTonka the Great Spirit. He would hold up a skull to the skies and speak to the Great Spirit and ask to be shown where to find this great animal so that his people would survive.

The buffalo skulls or bison skulls were beautifully decorated with hand-made beads and precious gemstones such as turquoise, feathers, and leather that they made from the buffalo hides. The skulls were also used for decorative purposes in a tipi, and were considered good medicine.

I have friend who is a taxidermist who has three buffalo hides and he told me that I could have one. I will make a buffalo rug out of it one day or use the buffalo leather for making things. Taxidermy is an art!

The Buffalo Skull Displaying Leather Pouches

... or medicine bags!

I will sometimes take leather coats and jackets apart to recycle the leather for other uses. Sometimes I use hides that I have bought. I love working with leather and these are some of the medicine bags that I make. I double stitch each leather pouch by hand.

Medicine Bags Displayed on the Bison Skull

The leather pouches I make are one of a kind. They make great gift bags for putting small items in such as a piece of jewelry that I have created from scratch with polymer clay or precious gem stones. - The flint tool from the Badlands, I wrapped in leather deer skin laces. It was most likely used by Native American Indians to clean buffalo hides to prepare them for tanning.

Buffalo Skull Displaying My Poison Dart Frogs

I like Buffalo skulls and I like poison dart frogs!

The necklace that is on the table is my very first polymer clay project, it is on memory wire and hugs the neck nicely. Each bead is handcrafted and most of them are initialed with SL to show originality created by SL Beads and Crafts. The other poison dart frog bead is just displayed on a cord as a pendant by its self. The other necklace I created from only glass beads during a chaotic 4-5 days in my life. I call the piece "Chaotic"!

I don't look at Skull Head as a buffalo trophy, I look at it as an artifact. A buffalo skull looks great on a wall as a mount in the right setting. I really like the European Mounts where the skulls are white.

My Little Frogs Close-up Picture with the Skull

I prize having a part of a bison skeleton that I named 'Skull Head!'

These works of art are for Sale or Bartering! ... More on that later!

Dance in a Buffalo Skull by Zitkala-Sa

Zitkala-Sa, translated the original Native American legend into English in 1901. It was illustrated by S.D. Nelson an award-winning Lakota artist. Dance in a Buffalo Skull is a picture book tale of mice conducting a dance in an old buffalo skull and a wildcat sneaks up on them. The tall tale is brought to life by the art that blends Lakota tradition and modern styles. At the peak of the dance, the wildcat is spotted and the mice run away into the dark! Faithful to the original legend, it is an enjoyable story that children and adults love. Also recommended is the first picture book in the Prairie Tale Series, "The Discontented Gopher".

Publisher: South Dakota State Historical Society (November 30, 2007)

Turquoise Jewelry on a Buffalo Skull Display

The buffalo horns on the skull have partly weathered away.

Turquoise is a beautiful precious gemstone that I enjoy because of its colors. I prefer the blue colors of turquoise stone but the greens are very lovely as well. I have several pieces of turquoise jewelry that I have designed, but this is about the buffalo skull. It really does make a nice display for Native American Style Jewelry.

Polymer Clay Fish Necklaces on the Skull

I don't usually display my fish necklaces on the Bullalo Skull but I thought I would show them.

These polymer fish pendants are fun to make, each is a one of a kind piece and are initialed with SL. The accompanying beads are created by me and one in the strand is initialed to show originality and that they were created by me. I also displayed a empty bottle that I recycled by decorating it with polymer clay and I made some clay beads to hang from it's side. I just love the display that the buffalo skull provides for my art work because I'm kind of native!

Tipi's Teepee Creeper on Buffalo Skull Picture

My Teepee Creepers were a birthday gift from my brother and his wife in 2007. They are so comfortable and warm, I really love them and wear them a lot. The sheep skin and fur hug my feet but there is plenty of room in them, my toes can wiggle around. My don't have a sole, so I spray to water proof them. I love the little canvas bay that come with them for carrying.
They make a great gift!

What do you think of my prized buffalo skull?

The Buffalo symbolizes honor, reverence or love for all the things that Mother Earth offers her children, and knowing that abundance is present when all relations are honored as sacred, and gratitude is shown to every living part of Creation. Buffalo offer a moment to reconnect with the meaningful value of life and of peace, to appreciate the gifts you now have, and to recognize with honor the sacredness in all paths, even those that may be different than your own. ~ The American Bison is an important animal to the Native People.bordor

Hah, there's something you don't see above every mantel (not up here in Seattle anyway!). I remember driving through the Badlands as a kid. Pretty in a you-wouldn't-want-to-be-stuck-out-here-if-the-car-broke-down kind of way. ;)

Gotta agree with you there, the Badlands is not a place to get stranded in. It is a land that is not very forgiving. Good to see you...been awhile. I'm sorry, I just get so busy, but I'll stop by to see what's new with you. ~ Thanks for the visit!!!

I loved not only learning about the buffalo skull but about the displays. That was a wonderful surprise on this lens, which I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.
